My mates and I watched one World Cup match with fans of every nation, without leaving London. This is our story.....

London is often described as the most multicultural city in the world, but how often do we actually experience that intoxicating diversity?
That was the question we asked ourselves a few months ago. Bored of living in our little bubbles, we saw the World Cup as an opportunity to meet Londoners from all over the planet, in parts of the city we’d never even seen.
So, we set ourselves, London – and everyone who lives here a challenge. Could we score an invite to watch one World Cup match with fans of every nation, without leaving the capital?
The four weeks that followed have given us a summer to remember – and it’s all thanks to the generosity and kindness of Londoners across the city.
We watched 58 World Cup matches, with fans of 32 different nations. Rode 168 tubes And 49 buses. We saw 152 goals 4 red cards And 39 VAR incidents. We witnessed late German drama in a Swedish church Danced until the early hours in a Nigerian barbershop And scoffed empanadas in a Colombian market. We stifled celebrations in the only Tunisian restaurant in the UK And savoured a Ronaldo hattrick in Little Portugal. We met London’s first Serbian pub landlord And sung on the top deck of a London bus with 100 Panama fans. We got fake tattoos at the Centre for Korean Culture Screamed ‘Allez les Bleus’ in a French cinema And judged a Japan-Colombia football dance-off in a casino. We got covered in beer at Hyde Park And watched Denmark win at Craven Cottage. We saw a last-minute winner in an Iranian restaurant Thunder-clapped with 0.1% of Iceland And smoked shisha in a Moroccan lounge. We danced in a secret Spanish taverna Were taught the Costa Rican national anthem And told a teary Argentinian youngster ‘we’ve been there’. We met a Belgium mum and her England-supporting son And screamed Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi Oi Oi! But more than anything we made new friends, we explored our city and we had our eyes opened, by Watching with the World.
Football might not be coming home, but the ride the dream took us on was one well worth taking.

  ANTM CYCLE 4 When she tried her luck in America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 4, Sarah was complimented for her first photo shoot. However, runway coach J. Alexander came in during the third week to teach the girls how to walk properly, it was pretty clear that Sarah was the one who experienced the most difficulty. The way she walked was awkward and lacking in poise, and the judges were quick to jump at those flaws. The judges sent Sarah home after only three weeks, making her the second finalist to be eliminated.
  POST-TOP MODEL Right after she was eliminated, Sarah expressed her shock and disbelief, saying that she felt she had much more potential than most of the other girls in the competition. She eventually recovered from her disappointment and went on to appear on Spike TV and in various fashion catalogues. She also spent one summer traveling and worked as a make-up artist for MAC cosmetics.

  ANTM CYCLE 4 When Brandy Rusher was a finalist on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 4, she showed a lot of promise in the beginning, but as the weeks progressed, it became apparent to everyone that Brandy had a bit of an attitude problem. During the first photo shoot with noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker, Brandy’s impatience and complaints angered Nigel, which led the judges to place Brandy in the bottom two. She was spared from elimination, but the experience did not seem to affect Brandy that much, as she continued to act rudely towards the other girls in the group. After the third photo shoot, the frustrated Brandy verbally attacked her fellow Top Model finalist Tatiana Dante. Later on, Brandy was again placed in the bottom two, but this time around, the judges decided that they were fed up with her attitude, so they sent her packing. Brandy was the third contestant to be eliminated.
  POST-TOP MODEL After appearing on the show, Brandy realized that even though she looked like a model, getting a job was a whole different story. However, Brandy’s experience on the show did awaken her to her flaws, and while she is still pursuing a career in modeling, she is also busy reinventing herself.   Brandy graduated from Houston Community College in 2009, where she majored in Fashion Design. She was arrested in Houston for resisting arrest in 2010.   ANTM CYCLE 4 During the fifth week, it was Noelle who first sounded the alarm about Michelle Deighton’s skin condition. She even called her mother to tell her about it. Later on, Michelle’s skin disease was treated and, while she was spared from the bottom two, Noelle found herself there with Lluvy Gomez. The judges felt that Noelle did not possess the look of a model, may it be in photographs or in person. Ultimately, the judges chose Lluvy over Noelle and immediately sent the latter home.
  POST-TOP MODEL Since the show, Noelle has busy taking care of her son and is cultivating her rediscovered passion for music. She has taken some test shots since the show, but has not been signed with an agency. In 2013, she got engaged. Not much else I could find after that.   ANTM CYCLE 4 Lluvy became one of the America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 4‘s most infamous contestants when Tyra Banks evaluated one of her photos as “the worst photo in the history of America’s Next Top Model.” She did get a chance to redeem herself in an episode of The Tyra Banks Show when she was allowed to perform a do-over of the shoot. Tyra called her new photo “amazing”. However, the judges’ patience ran out with Lluvy after she again failed to maximize her unique beauty during the fifth photo shoot, where the girls were asked to project themselves under simulated harsh weather conditions. She was the fifth contestant to be eliminated.

  ANTM CYCLE 4 Tiffany wanted to jumpstart her modeling career by joining Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model. However, she did not progress to the next stage of the competition. At first, Tiffany tried her best to get along with the other girls, and she was able to establish a close relationship with Brandy. However, on the eighth week, she was able to win the interview challenge with hip-hop artist, Eve. She was the most prepared of all the girls.   ANTM CYCLE 4 As a finalist in Cycle 4, Brittany was the most vivacious. Her strong personality sometimes clashed with fellow Top Model finalist Tiffany Richardson, with whom she had a confrontation. Her performances in the earlier challenges were not so impressive, having landed in the bottom two after her second batch of photos shoot came out a little bit too sexual. She bounced back the following week by producing a beautiful Sagittarius picture. From there, she continued to perform much more strongly, even coming out with the best picture from the fifth photo shoot. The end came for Brittany after a fight with fellow Top Model finalist, Keenyah Hill, broke her high spirits.   ANTM CYCLE 17 In 2011, Brittany was invited back to participate in the All Star Cycle of the show. Keenyah’s fellow Top Model finalist Brittany Brower got so tired of hearing Keenyah’s hypocrisy regarding the South African president that she started reprimanding Keenyah verbally. One of their South African shoots required the girls to embody different kinds of animals. My time in Dakar, Senegal

The study abroad phenomenon is what I like to call it. You get on a plane and you land somewhere different, surrounded by new people. Your life for the next several months is highly stimulating. Over time, you start to become what you’ve always wanted to become, but never had the ability to actualize; it is possible because the life you live abroad is so detached from the life you’re accustomed to, and there is nothing to hold you back beyond yourself.
I’m in Dakar. For those who may not know, it’s a fairly large and moderately developed city at the western most point of great mother Africa. It is well developed in a handful of areas, mostly along the coast where Europeans like to spend their time, but that’s not my jam. Fuck that. I live with a poor family in a poor neighborhood, and I only need to go to the nicer parts of the city when i’m homesick or when I need to buy soap. Now, to spare you a vast depiction of my life at home, suffice it to say that I’m fairly uninteresting. I adore my life, and I’m not necessarily boring, but if I sat you down and told you my life story, you’d probably start wiggling your toes and day dreaming about saving your school from a shooter, or boobs (bonus points if both at the same time). I’ve always been unsatisfied with this. My method of reflecting on my existence is asking myself whether people would enjoy my life as a novel. So far, my novel rests ahead of anything Martha Stewart writes, but well behind the rest.
I met a mysterious Puerto Rican man here in Dakar. He lives a few doors down in the ever inviting neighborhood of Sacre Coeur 3. He is a devout catholic, and he always wears a black beret. For the sake of anonymity, let’s call him Ché. Now, I enjoyed our first couple outings to local bars. He is a generous guy with enough wisdom to turn a baboon into a philosopher (I’m patiently awaiting the day I see this, btw). Anyway, I soon discovered that this devout catholic man, wasn’t quite as simple as I thought.
One night he took me along with him to a dank-ass, dreary Dakar casino. It glows pink on the outside, and on the inside there are more prostitutes than gamblers. He disappeared the instant we entered. Off to the roulette table he went, leaving me in his dust to take in this bizarre facility filled with to the brim with the scum of the Earth. My first night, I won big at the blackjack table, alongside a fellow American woman, who I assumed to be an agent of sorts, because she had a keen eye on the owner of the Casino. He’s an intimidating French expat who has undoubtedly killed with his bare hands for nothing more than pleasure or the desire to feel powerful. The casino is his domain. He is king. Leader of the scum.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and Ché had me hooked. We were going several times a week, planning out roulette strategies in French class and dreaming of the fat stacks of money that we’d have sitting in front of us after a good night.We played fearlessly alongside Chinese warlords and Lebonese princes. Some of these people, in their infinite corruptness, can throw down over one thousand dollars each spin.
Then came the night of all nights. We sat down at our table, at the usual time on Thursday nights (21:50). We got right to it, playing our strategies side by side, which complement each other quite well to the point that when he wins, I also win, and the opposite applies as well. We went up big early, several thousand dollars big, which isn’t half bad for some lowly college students. The scum crawled out of their holes to watch us as we threw down hundreds of dollars at a time audaciously. A large man in a leather jacket came in and chatted with the scum King for a minute. I was fairly certain he was our assassin. In the previous month, we had put a serious dent in the casino’s earnings, and they knew it was due to us. He could whack us with ease upon leaving the casino, and hiding us would be even easier. I slowly forgot about him as the winnings kept piling up. Unfortunately, even we had the capacity face the inertia of a few bad spins. We came crashing down like a 747 with no wings, filled with lead. Within minutes, we burned away our towers of chips, succumbing to the wrath of the gambling gods. We had forsaken them. Though we lost everything, we perhaps gained back our lives, as the assassin no longer had a reason to take us out back and put two bullets between our eyes. It is worth noting that we outlasted everyone at the table that night. The corrupt Frenchman, who supposedly works in the EU economics department, and another man that comes with his wife every night and loses ten times what I could even aspire to lose in a lifetime.
We’re going back next weekend.
This, is my life in Senegal. A life that will stay in Senegal when I head home to my mundane life in the winter.
