Ladies and Gentlemen I have an innovative idea that will change the landscape of cryptospace forever. I present you the infinite reverse Ponzi scheme.

I present you the Hellcoin (HELL). What is Hellcoin you may ask? Well the idea is extremely simple yet innovative. It’s a reverse Ponzi scheme. It rewards latecomers (instead of early investors and founder like in regular Ponzi schemes) and does not collapse from unsustainable growth but instead snowballs into an ever growing black hole indefinitely. It’s like a chicken game on the blockchain. Don’t believe me? Here are the parameters:
The founder stars by depositing crypto in a smart contract. Let’s say he starts by depositing $100 worth of ETH into HELL. This is the initial prize. New investors can start to put their money in now. After new investor puts their money in the timer is set to 72 hours. If no one puts any new money in that timeframe the last 100 contributors (not counting founder) get all the money from the contract proportionally to their contribution. In theory it takes one daring guy to put a single cent (minimal contribution) to get the whole 100 bucks for free. Of course if the system has any money in it there will always be another smartass that will put 1 cent too just to get a part of that cake. If someone new enters the timer is reset again to 72 hours. So in this example we have 2 smartasses who paid 1 cent to get about 50 bucks or more specifically 100.02/2 so 50 dollars and 1 cent. Nice gains. Obviously more will follow (share this on /biz/ and you will have as many “investors” as ponzicoin easily).
Nothing stops you from putting more than 1 cent of course. Like 1 dollar or 10 dollars. You will always be rewarded accordingly for your contribution counting the total pool provided by the last 100 investors. You can compete with others. You can also outsmart them and create 100 orders for 1 cent. Of course other investors may try the same strategy as well. Timer resets every time new money enters the game. Fun times.
Example 1: There are already total 10k dollars in the system (crazy, I know) provided by investors. Let’s say the last 100 contributors are 99 Average Joes that put 1 dollar in and Mr. Whale who put 101 dollars in. So the last 100 contributors’ pool is 199 dollars. After calculating the percentage of shares Joes get 49,5% of 10k to divide among themselves so 4950/99 equals 50 bucks for each. Pretty neat ROI right? Mr. Whale was a strong hand though and his ballsy move got him a nice bag of 5050 dollars.
Example 2: There are 100k dollars in the system provided by previous investors who did not win for some reason. The last 100 contributors are Cheap Joes who only put $0.01 in. Let’s say that conveniently ISIS sabotaged internet or Tether exploded or something and nobody managed to outbid that because they were too busy panicking. You know what this means right? Cheap Joes get 1k each for the measly 1 cent investment. How can you not like these gainz? It’s basically free money! You get the idea. Praise Hell.
Example 3: (in case you still don’t get it): There are 10 dollars in the system because the founder is a cheapskate. Let’s say the first 99 contributors are again Cheap Joes that pay 1 cent because they do not believe in the glorious idea of Hell but hey, they FOMO’ed anyway. The last contributor is Mr Moron who put in 1000 dollars because he is a fat fingered whale. Now let’s say Mr Moron’s incredibly strong hand intimidated every other player and he was the last one (dream on). The total pool is $1010.99. After calculating shares Cheap Joes get only roughly one cent (my math may be off, too lazy to double check). Also we will always conveniently round up gains to at least 1 cent automatically because no bad deed should go unrewarded. This means Mr Moron won $9.01 off his $1000 investment. Not the best ROI ever but still better than average Ponzi. You know you’d play. Hell is fun.
Pros and Cons of Hell
Pros:
Cons:
Conclusion
Because Hell relies on being as secretive and repelling as possible at some point obviously it will spread like plague due to reverse psychology and eat incredible amounts of stupid money. And it will never, ever stop. Hell will continue to eat small increments of money indefinitely because as time passes the stake will only increase and incentivize everyone to put just a tiny bit more because there is a non-zero chance they will be the last to bet on this scam and win glorious prize. Obviously spammers will set up bots to always be on the bottom of this pyramid so we must spice things up because wasting someone else’s money once every 72 hours would be too boring and spammers need to be taught a lesson as well.
Therefore every time the initial investment rises by an order of magnitude the time frame would shrink by 20%. So lets say initial 100 bucks goes to 1000 then to 10000. The time frame will shrink from 72h -> 57.6h -> 46.08h and so on. Because I’m not a sadist it will not decrease indefinitely (otherwise at some point people would use high frequency spambots to win billions, it could really get out of hand during the last stage of this scam if the time frame got to seconds, not hours) and because I want to give honest bag holders without bots and scripts a chance as well the lowest hard limit would be 10 hours. People need to sleep you know? Have fun. In Hell. Muahahahahhaa!
Unfortunately I’m just the ideas guyTM so I must count on some tech savvy person to create Hell on the blockchain on their own and puttheir100bucksin. But you know you want to. You will share your eternal fame with me. The urge to give birth to this meme is too strong. It’s pulling you in. We will be remembered by entire generations as the creators of Hell on Earth. How cool is that? Cmon Robin, I’m offering you a practically free (okay 100 bucks and some effort but you get the idea) batmobile ride. Get in. We’re going to Hell.
HELLcoin – We’re in this together :)
FAQ
Q: Why would this work?
A: Human nature. More secure and predictable than blockchain. You can always count on it.
Q: It won’t work.
A: You don’t like practically free 100 bucks? Okay then. Actually I meant 200 bucks. Well, if you want to miss out those sweet 500 bucks it’s your decision. Someone else will win those 2000 bucks instead. Your loss. Just don’t blame me when your wife files for divorce after she learns you missed out 50k like a no coiner beta noob. Cmon man. I’m practically giving you a fortune for free. Just invest 1 fucking penny and see for yourself, how hard is that? Just try it out, you can stop anytime you want.
Q: What do you get out of this?
A: Mad laughs. Eternal glory. Memes.
Q: You know this may eventually get out of hand?
A: I’m counting on it.
Q: You’re insane.
A: It’s not a question.
Q: I’m serious.
A: Okay, I am, so what?
Q: Is there no upper limit to this madness?
A: Of course there is. People will eventually become bored with it once it stops being funny and this will be the perfect time for you to get in. Trust me.
Q: There must be some kind of law against it.
A: I bet there is. But until the scheme is over who will you blame for scamming you? Technically you’re not scammed until this is over and someone takes your money. Brilliant isn’t it? It’s basically a pool of idiots throwing bunch of money into a black hole and expecting they may come out one day in the future. Sue me in the afterlife suckeeeeeeeer, hahahahahaha!
Q: Future generations will hate you, you know?
A: I don’t think I can beat Hitler, but second place is good enough for me. I’m not ambitious. Also, slow and steady wins the race if you catch my drift.
Q: Isn’t this worse than regular casino?
A: So is a big chunk of crypto space. Wake up.
Q: I lost a fortune. It’s your fault. Give me my money back or you’re fucked. I have a very particular set of skills.
A: I graduated top of my class. Come at me bro.
Q: Is your username relevant somehow?
A: Absolutely not.
Q: So how do I get in early?
A: You’re serious?
Edit: formatting.
Edit2: Someone gilded this post, thank you. I appreciate your feedback everyone. I hope I gave you some good laughs and some food for thought (and possibly a blueprint for a doomsday machine to some mad scientist...).
Edit3: This idea is obviously unrefined and there are a lot of arbitrary values in in that could be easily adjusted or replaced by something else (for example the pool of winners is 100, but after thinking a bit about it I'm more inclined to believe 10 is better number to increase competition). I encourage everyone to read the comments in this thread for additional insight, we did quite a lot of brainstorming.

Logan and the Antarctic - Chapter One.

Logan age 26
Struggling musician, lives in Vegas. Takes odd jobs like magician's assistant and Ubering people around.
Cooks top ramen with a sprinkle of cheese and an egg because it makes him feel fancy.
Owns a YouTube channel although not a successful one. He's talented he just doesn't have the marketing savvy.
Into conspiracy theory videos. Stays up late sometimes watching 10-15 videos in a row going from simple UFO / Bob Lazar stuff, to debating whether the earth is flat using 6th grade Trigonometry. He knows it's not flat, but sometimes he looks up and can't help but wonder.

He's that shady guy at coffee houses. Wears a scarf to places that you don't expect people to wear scarfs. Always has stubble but never a full beard. Which is odd because you rarely see him shaving, you'd think his stubble was permanently tattooed on his face.

Hosts various open mic nights around the city every other week.
People mistake him for Russell Brand until they hear him speak.

"Russell! Russell!" you'd hear them running up on the strip trying to take a selfie, sometimes he just goes with it.

One night our would-be British celebrity picks up a couple in his Uber. They're young in their mid 20s.

The woman has wavy brown hair, in a navy blue mini skirt with dark red heels and a white blouse. As soon as they get in the car she starts crying begging the man who appears to be her husband to stay.

She appears to be a little tipsy and has a pizza stain on her right shoulder. Logan can see from the mirror, aside from being a messy eater, she's also very worried for her husband's well being.

"Honey I can't let you go all that way alone. Don't they have housing for spouses on the base?" She begs.

"No.. normally yes but... Baby we can talk about this when we get home. Please.." The man looks as though he fears she might say something that might get them both killed.

"How dare you leave me all alone while you go to fucking ANTARCTICA!!!! What the fuck is so great about Antarctica anyway? Do they have hot Antarctican strippers on the base? I bet that's what it is. You're cheating on me with a whale!!!!!"

She laughs with tears in her eyes.

"Baby I told you.. \Looking at Logan glaring at him in the rear-view\** It's.... it's classified".

"CLASSIFIED CLASSIFIED THAT'S ALL YOU EVER SAY! I'M YOUR WIFE!!!!!!! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TELL ME THINGS ANYWAY!!!
Like that time you told me about the space craft they found in New Mexico. And the portal in Africa. And the pasta colander Gina found in Switzerland"- hiccuuppp

"....The particle collider in Geneva, Switzerland*... Dear you're so drunk... Please.."

"YEAH THAT THING!!!! IF YOU TOLD ME ABOUT THAT WHY CAN'T YOU TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON IN ANTARCTICA!?"

".... I'm so sorry sir she had a little too much to drink tonight. You can just let us out over here. Thank you. Here's a tip. For the disturbance."

He hands Logan $100 bill. As if to keep quiet about what he had just heard.

"Hey" said Logan to the man who had just handed him a crisp hundo.

Being a conspiracy nut himself and having done tons of research on Antarctica, Logan needed to know more but he couldn't let on that he wanted to know more.

"Are you guys hiring? For... for that trip I mean... Uber... doesn't pay very well at all. And well... I could reaaally get out of this damned heat, a change of pace in Antarctica sounds exciting."

Faking desperation, thinking it would help his case. People sometimes take pity on you if you plead nicely, Logan has learned.

"I'm not supposed to say... and normally I wouldn't. But.. you've got that same look in your eye that I once had. So... I definitely did not tell you that we're leaving from Los Angeles in 2 days. And if you were somehow to show up at this address with a suitcase and a sad story, you might get hired as a cook on board our ship. The captain has a soft spot for sad stories. But I didn't say that. Have a good night."

Logan thought for a minute.

"A cook... hmm... I don't know how to cook...But I gotta get on that boat somehow...
I don't have a lot of money either.. Ahhhh who am I kidding. Me? Antarctica? Pshhhhhhh"

With a swipe of his finger on his smart phone that fit snug into the cup holder of his silver and black SUV, he logged off the UBER app and headed to the Circus Circus with a crisp hundred dollar bill.

He hands his keys to the parking attendant who gives him a claim ticket.

"You can come to me later for free parking validation sir!!"

"Thanks......Hmm.. I like what they did with the remodel" Logan says under his breath as he passes a gaudy slot machine decorated with polar bears, ice bergs and a huge fan set up to blow cold air on your face every time you pull the lever.

"Worth it just to get out of the heat, I'd say.."
Something pulled him towards that specific slot machine. Maybe it was the remnant of a frantic woman drunkenly babbling on about government conspiracies or maybe it was... fate.

With a fold, a tug and a whirling grinding of the tiny conveyor belt, Logan had a feeling he would never see that hundred dollar bill again.

Part of a 50s doo-wap song begins to play on the machine before a loud obnoxious voice takes over.

"ARE YOU READY TO PLAY BYEEEEEEE POLARRRRRR!!!!!! LETS GET READY TO CRUMBLLLLLLLEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!.... THESE ICE BERGS!!!!!!! Choose your bet and pull the lever! Try max bet for a chance to win 20 free spins and an entry into our million dollar jackpot at the end of the night!!!!!"

"Yeah right... I just want the free buffet. It's reasonable? Come on. Give me a buffet"
As Logan presses max bet, pulls the lever and the warm musty air blows on his face from the fan that obviously needs a can of freon, Logan can't help but wonder if he should have just got a buffet with the hundred dollar bill.

"Well too late now"

The machine starts whirling and spinning, a video of a big ice wall pops up as a bunch of birds in military uniforms attempt to jump over it as each number counts down.

Sorry you lose. Admiral Bird is sad. Try again?

Logan goes to spin again but it won't budge. He glances over at the sign that reads "Max Bet $100"

"Wow I spent $100 on one spin???? Are you serious??? What a rip off..."

As Logan stands up from the chair that looked more like a throne and had 10 ice swords sticking out of it with a vortex in the middle, he hears another whirling printing noise coming from the machine.

"Keep this ticket for the million dollar drawing at the end of the night! Your number is 74819!! If 74819 gets called, show this ticket to the concierge to collect your prize. Not valid if you leave the casino before the drawing. Not valid if you go to the bathroom before the drawing. Not valid if folded. Not valid if you validate your parking. Void where prohibited"

"Geeez what a load of crap.. Not valid not valid, you'd think they would just print "GFYS" and be done with it".

$100 was all Logan was willing to spend at the casino. He knows the slots are rigged, but he also knows they're on a certain percentage payout, meaning if enough money goes in, some money has to come out. $100 is his limit. It's a rule. With a rule like that you'd think he knows what he's doing, except the most he's ever won was $900 on a malfunctioning roulette machine in Atlantic City.

Logan heads for the door to go validate his parking when he hears on the loud speaker:

"Greeeeetings Circus Circus fam!!! We're about to announce the winner of our million dollar jackpot drawing. BEtter not VaLidAte your parking just yet!! We'll be calling out one number every 5 minutes until the final number is drawn!!!!"

Logan looks at the parking attendant and snatches his ticket back before he had a chance to stamp it.

"Awe mannnnn they pay me for every stamp" The attendant with red hair and braces cried.

"Shut up kid, I'm trying to hear this"

"ANd nOw the MOMENT YOU'VE ALL been waiting for.... the million dollar drawing!! FIRST NUMBER IN 30 SECONDS!!!!!"

The parking attendant tries to stamp Logan's ticket without him noticing. Logan stares at him with a Bruce Lee stare that said "I'll kill you with subtitles".

"If your number has a 3 in itttttttttt!!!!!!!!" - Logan exhales and reaches to give the parking attendant the ticket he's been drooling over like Gollum at a wedding rehearsal.

"Then you're out of luck because the first number is 7!!!!!!!!"

"NOT TODAY GOLLUM!!!!!!!" - Logan snatches the ticket back and starts to run as the attendant hisses.

The attendant chases Logan around the casino with his freshly inked stamp while each number brings him closer to the prize. Logan careful not to fold it or enter any bathrooms before the final number gets called.

Finally Logan seemed to lose the red haired parking attendant and found refuge sitting near an old lady in fishnet stockings playing a fortune teller slot.

Trying to keep his cool knowing he's only 1 number away from a million dollar jackpot (minus taxes of course), he tries to make small talk with the aunt-like fishnet wearer.

"So.. do you have one of those tickets too?"

A little giggle comes out as the woman pulls the lever to the slot in front of her.

"No..... I don't. But I do have.... a PARKING VALIDATION STAMP!!!!!!!"

What Logan thought to be a nice old woman woman turns her head to reveal a toothy grin from the red haired parking attendant.

"Holy shit what are they paying you guys???? I'm not even mad.. That's impressive.. No really, like how you did your eye shadow? It's a lovely color on you. It looks like Egyptian markings!"

The parking attendant blushes.
"Oh you really think -"

*AND NOW THE FINAL NUMBER!!!! 9!!!!!! If your ticket says 74819 then head to the cashier right away to collect your prize!!!!!"

Logan takes off running towards the cashier. The attendant doesn't chase after him, instead just sits there feeling sad because he actually thought Logan was complimenting his eye shadow.

"I would have let him off the hook ya know. I've validated parking for so long, no one ever... validated my markings....."

Some time later, Logan sitting in the back room of the Circus Circus cashier cage with a team of people making sure that he didn't get his parking validated or took a bathroom break, trying to find any loop hole to deny him a payout.

A short chubby bald man holding a cigar, dressed in a short black suit snarled at Logan while a team of data scientists prepare Matplotlib graphs from camera footage in Jupyter Notebooks on a server a few feet away. The short man looked like Dr Eggman played by Danny Devito joining the Men in Black.

"Okay Fine you got us, kid. Here take your damned cash. You earned it fair and square."

Leading Logan into the "back-back" room filled with the sound of cash rolling through the electrical money counters and yellow paper bands with a tiny bit of glue being wrapped around and tightened against stacks of green currency with old men's pictures printed in the center to denote dollar amount.

"1 million dollars. Minus taxes and parking attendant therapy fee that's 6 hundred thousand, 3 hundred and 68 dollars annnnd 46 cents." The short balding Eggman said.

"Parking attendant therapy fee? Seriously?"

"Look kid, we can give you 6 hundred grand and change or free parking validation. Which will it be???"

Sensing that this isn't your average casino, and that this isn't an average situation, realizing the reality that he was just hours ago driving for $10 dollars a ride, now having over half a million after tax dollars in his face, he said what any human in his position would say.

"I'll take the cash...."

2 days, 40 grand and 5 high class call girls later..

Logan arrives to the address scribbled on the back of an Ale house business card. Turns out it was an abandoned building. The guy was just messing with him.

"I drove 4 hours for nothing.. Maybe she was just wasted. Antarctica sounded so cool though. The mystery. I need to know what they're hiding... Man how am I gonna get to Antarctica?"

Driving down the industrial complex, Logan spots a travel agency. "Maybe they have a cruise?"

The door opens with a BEEEEEEP and a jingle of door chimes with the atmosphere of a knock off 7/11 on a back alley road. It even had those little red and green door beads that lead to the back room where you just know there's a round table and an elderly group of ethnic gentlemen in tank tops smoking cigarettes and complaining about the "races".

"Can I help you?" A tall dark gentleman in a red and yellow Hawaiian shirt with curly black hair said in a rough southern British accent. Which was weird because he seemed.. not British.

"Uh...... yes do you guys have anything for Antarctica?"

"Ohhh quite booked up eeem'afraid. Yup till September."

"Well that's only next week..."

"Of 2022 eem'afrraiid, yup it's quite a while yup."

"Why... are you talking like that?"

"Look we're booked up bruv. If you wanna have a go at one of our Hawaiian cruises I can put you on the next boat to Waikiki which leaves in an hour."

"Dude come on, how can I get to Antarctica? I got money..."

"How much money?"

"I'll spend 100k on it if I have to. I want to go to Antarctica."

"Hmmmmmmmmm wellll woi didn'tcha say so govna, come on back let's have a look at our private charters why don't we".

The clearly not British man in the tacky Hawaiian shirt led Logan down past the rasta beads to the back room which.. looked exactly as Logan presumed

"Ayeeeeeee Earl man wants to go to Antarctica. Got 100k"

"100k? To go to Antarctica? Why? Can't he wait til 2022 it's only 4k. What's the rush?"

Both the tall dark gentleman stare confused at Logan. Logan himself looks a bit bewildered.

When he really thought about it, he hadn't even made a plan. "Just get to Antarctica" was the plan. But as to what was next once he got there he hadn't given really much thought.

"To be honest I have no clue myself, I just... wanna go. See the sights.."
Logan said not wanting to raise any red flags.

"THATS E SPEEEREEEET" the clearly not British man shouted, as both Logan and his counter-part looked frightened.

"Sorry... I mean... yeah man that's the spirit!"

Earl peered down at Logan through his black rimmed prescription glasses in confusion and doubt, wondering if he's actually got the 100k to spend.

"For 100k I'll take ye there and back. But how'loi know you got the monay" said Earl who didn't before but now has a very thick Scottish accent.

"Well I just won a jackpot from the Circus Circus in Vegas. See here's a bag full of money. They even zip locked stacks for me at a nominal fee."

"Circus Circus eh? A wise guy eh? Oi want payment up front and en cash. And ye gotta sign a waver, if'n ye die in and or around the boat during any time from here to Antarctica and back, you hold SaberTooth Charter LLC indemifiable for all liability and such."

The other clearly not British man chimed in "Yeah indemnifiable!"

".......I'm gonna have to think about it...." Logan said, backing away slowly, clearly uncomfortable, trying to peacefully exit the building.

"Okay fine fine... I'll drop the accent and you can pay half now, half when we get there. 3 meals a day, whole crew ready to do your bidding. It'll take 4 weeks. We'll stop in Guadalajara, El Salvador, Ecuador, Peru, Chile straight to Antarctica. If you've got any specific spots you'd like to check out along the way, we'll try to accommodate you. Fair enough?"

"Deal." said Logan.

How much was the worst bad beat you ever saw for? What happened? I'm guessing you mean a losing streak? The most I've seen someone lose in a single night is probably about $500,000, but I'm not yet coded for the private gaming salons that see the absolute biggest bets.
You're a high roller dealer, but unaware of what a bad beat means? He means a huge upset in a single hand. AA losing to 2;7 on a A222K board for example. Poker is not a table game, and we don't consider poker players "high rollers" anyway.
Not yet coded? Is that done by your casino or is it something done by a governing body? Both, basically. If I'm going to deal anything I need to be accredited by the casino, and the casino is responsible to the government for its accreditations.
Are you allowed to, and have you ever accepted an invite to hang with high rollers outside the casino? Any stories? I've been propositioned once by an Asian guy (I'm a dude), but besides that, no.
They're all dead-eyed losers, right? Outside of Friday and Saturday nights, most of the people are just sad. On a weeknight I'll start off my shift at a table and return to it eight hours later to see exactly the same players.
I could pretty much write the script for what they'll talk about, how they'll bet and how they'll react right from the beginning of the shift.
So what's the script? Can you tell us? I'm one of those dead eyed losers, minus the high-roller status :( From experience I can tell you which players will walk away early, which players will keep on raising until they lose everything and which players will chuck a hissy fit when that happens.
I think most players aren't really there to win money - they're there to gamble. They could win a hundred times their bet in the first ten minutes and they'd give it all back, because they've essentially psychologically committed themselves to ten or more hours of gambling before they walk in the door.
You're a high roller dealer, but unaware of what a bad beat means? Seriously. I stopped reading immediately. Poker is a blip on the fringe of what most casinos do. There's no reason to expect that a table game dealer should automatically know a lot about poker.
Whats the biggest amount of money someone won? while you were dealing? In a single hand, $100,000. Over the course of a night, about $400,000. (Both in the VIP)
On the main floor the most I've given away in one hand was $75K on a jackpot bet.
now the biggest loss? In a night, about 500K. In a single hand, $100K. Although he won it back the next hand.
What are the official (or unofficial) ranks that a dealer climbs to get into the VIP rooms? Is it integrity based or just have to know the right people? The place I work at is pretty regulated and the system is reasonably fair. Everyone starts with a school where they'll be taught one major game - usually roulette or blackjack. That takes about five weeks of full time training.
Once they graduate, they start dealing in the main floor and are referred to as "lumpies" because their dealing is not yet smooth.
After 6-12 months they'll come back and be trained in a second major game. At this point they have a decision - they can learn baccarat and eventually move into the VIP, or they can learn roulette or blackjack and stay on the main floor.
I was lucky enough to get baccarat early. I dealt it on the main floor for about six months, then I did VIP training and started working there.
What's the craziest thing you've ever seen? On a Saturday night once I was dealing to a player and his girlfriend, both of whom seemed totally sober.
The man came up to my roulette table and bought in for $20. He lost it in one spin, and proceeded to very calmly take off his pants (not his underwear) and hand them to his girlfriend. Then they both very casually walked out the door with security following right behind.
That just sounds like a bet. Quite possibly.
Did you find out why this happened? As thatissomeBS said, it was probably a bet. Once they're out the door we really don't care that much.
I might be a bit late. Do you get paid much, what do the organisers do to prevent cheating etc, what are the rules of dealing? I get $24 an hour, plus weekend penalties.
A lot goes in to preventing cheating. There are a ton of cameras watching every table, plus supervisors.
What famous people were cool - which were aholes? While I've been in the VIP we've had Bruno Mars and One Direction in (most performers who visit my city stay at the casino). Both were pretty polite and friendly from what I've heard (I didn't deal to them). Lady Gaga once played at the casino and went for a drink on the main floor afterward.
What's the minimum on the roulette table? I've seen numbers as high as $5,000 before. The roulette minimums are actually pretty low. The highest in the whole casino is $25.
But you've got to bear in mind that that's per bet, and the average roulette player places anywhere between 20 and 100 bets per hand.
Has anyone ever "struck it rich" while you were working? Never enough to retire, but I've given away six figures to players before. My favourite big winner was probably a guy who walked up to my $25 roulette table once and cashed in or $50.
When I gave him his two chips he looked up at the table limit sign and realised that he'd made a mistake (he wanted the $2.50 table), but he was either too proud to cash out again or he couldn't be bothered. Anyway, he placed his two chips and I spun up.
Bam - straight up. $875. He bets the lot.
Next hand: About $2000.
At this point I got taken off for a break. When I came back 15 minutes later the guy had $25,000.
Is it $25 per bet or $25 inside/outside? In the US a $25 min means you must have to have $25 total on numbers, so could have a bunch of $1/$2 bets. $25 minimum bet inside, $100 on the dozens and $200 on the even chances. We don't have aggregate minimums where I work, they're too hard to keep track of.
Kinda reminds me of what i did. walked into a casino with £10 after getting stuck in town after a night out. £5 on a jack n coke. £5 on chips. walked out an hour later with £85 to my name. not a massive win, but it got me a taxi ride home! You're my favourite type of punter.
Does your casino run true baccarat in the high limit area or is it mini-bac? Mini-bac. Full size baccarat requires too many staff and isn't any more popular than mini-bac.
Anyone ever try to take their anger out on you? Oh lordy, I was hoping someone would ask this.
The answer is yes, every single night. Most players believe that they're special, and that their strategy is foolproof. When it comes undone, it can't be their fault. How could it? They're a gambling genius! It must be someone else's fault, and 90% of the time that someone else is me.
If they lose on roulette it's because I spun the ball too slow or too fast. If they lose on baccarat it's because I turned the cards over too quickly (seriously) or I passed them out the "wrong" way.
I've been yelled at plenty of times, and sent off the table by high rollers plenty. I once had a man who just have me a two-minute long ice cold stare after he lost on roulette. I kept going about my business, but every time I looked up he was staring right at me like he wanted to punch me.
In my very first hour of casino dealing I did a cash change for a man who had got himself confused about how much cash he had given me. We deferred to surveillance to sort it out, and carried on with the game. For the next ten minutes while we were waiting for the camera verdict he stood at the end of the table and ripped into me. He gave me every insult he could think of, to the point where other players got involved to tell him to cool it. In the end, it was his mistake. He turned bright red, cashed out immediately and left.
If that's your worst story, then that's actually not too bad. Glad to hear nothing ever got physical. Not yet at least, although other dealers have been punched. It's the last place you'd want to do it though, when you're covered by hundreds of cameras and surrounded by security.
Here's hoping your "never been punched" streak continues! Take care! Cheers!
Thoughts on the Phil Ivey Borgata Story? Sounds like a great scam, but I'm surprised the casino was willing to oblige his request for a particular type of card.
Have you been involved with any high rollers on the craps table? .. No craps at my casino, very few tables in Australia. I've seen quite a few old Asian men with young Asian girlfriends, but my most surprising was an old Asian woman with a young white guy escorting her. Everything about her demeanour to him was totally masteslave. He sat on the sidelines while she gambled and got her drinks when she told him to. Occasionally he wanted to gamble so she would pass him chips and shoo him away.
what was the largest age differences between a high roller and his arm candy?
Poker rooms have their own high roller rooms. But what table dealer doesn't know the term 'bad beat'? It might also be an Americanism? I've never heard the term, but I also don't deal poker.
I'm not american. bad beat is a poker term - simply put, it is when the player with significantly better odds to win a hand, loses Fair enough, but Poker is not really a primary casino game.
Whenever poker players find out I'm a dealer they always seem to have the impression that poker is all there is. We do have a poker room where I work, but it's a small, separate department that is colloquially referred to as daycare.
What was the biggest fail/mistake you've ever made (while dealing)? I've made plenty of mistakes, but the worst is clearing the wrong number in roulette. I heard once about a dealer who was dealing a game with big bets on red, and the ball came up 32 red. He put the dolly on red and cleared everything else, including the bets on even and 32. Took hours to reconstruct by camera.
Do you think that there is some bad karma for not tipping the dealer if you are on a winning streak? No tipping in Australia, but if you win a jackpot it's customary to get them a gift voucher.
Do you count cards? Nearly all auto shufflers where I work, so it doesn't work.
I know I'm such a hardcore gambler right? Do you see people like me very often or do gamblers shun noobs like me? The hardcore gamblers will probably still be cold to you, especially if you "mess up" their blackjack hand (they're always looking for a scapegoat). But if you go on a Friday or Saturday night, stick to low limits and be friendly to the dealer you'll have a good time regardless of whether you win or lose.
Are you going to answer questions during your ama. You're one of "those" players.
Yes but bad beats can carry over to a variety of different table games, it's meaning remaining the same. In two years I've never heard a player use that expression. I don't doubt it is one, but colloquialisms like that aren't always universal.
That's nothing. Some of the high roller rooms on the strip will see $500k per hand. Yeah, I'm not yet salon coded and I know my casino has much bigger games.
I was security, doing a table drop (taking money out to be counted) and back in the high roller suites. This guy had five hands, betting like $250k-500k USD per hand. Still pretty scary dealing a $100K game though.
What is the biggest tip and what is your average tip. In Australia players are not allowed to tip, but they can buy players gifts (and gift cards). I've only received two in my time. The biggest was $500 for dealing a $75,000 jackpot to a table poker player.

Questions Answers
Two questions, actually! Completely unrelated: 1) What's the weirdest conversation you've had with a gambler in recent memory? 2) Have you ever advised a first time gambler / someone who isn't quite sure of the rules..on let's say, the blackjack table? I've had guests tell great stories of there experiences with "working girls" as we call them.
All the time...most guests do not know how to play...that is actually part of the dealers job description...helping/advising guests how to play the games
Any asshole celebrity stories? I've meet an enormous amount of pro-athletes...I have nothing bad to say about them. Second hand celebrity stories...tons. J-Lo is a notorious stiff...Ben Afflack, Barkley, Rodman...nothing but great things.
I heard Beyonce was beyond rude...stiffed a cocktail waitress at the Wynn It is common knowledge among dealers that Jordan and Tiger do NOT tip.
I took a cab ride in Vegas, cabbie told me that Scottie Pippen is known as "No tipping Pippen". I haven't heard anything about Pippen...maybe it is b/c Pippen doesn't play the tables and when I refer to someone as a stiff it is about them not tipping dealers...not necessarily how they treat waiters, waitresses, etc etc.
What's the most money someone won in your table? Or lost? What are the skills required to be a dealer? I dealt to one person who lost 1 million playing craps the night the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl...the first time. The most...I've seen a 100k winner...I am mostly in dice, so I never dealt and supervised baccarat, which is the game that gets all of the BIG action...I mean BIG play. People with multi-million credit limits, Royalty, etc etc...skills required by a dealer is simply just one who is talkative, gregarious, outgoing.
Have you ever seen the move Casino? Yes...my grandfather and his siblings actually worked in Vegas at that time...so much money was made...by everyone.
Thats pretty cool. My fathers Aunt said DeNiro's character was god awfully ugly and Sharon Stone's character was gorgeous...I had an accounting professor who was on the Gaming commission at the time they put Tony Spilatro (Pesci's character) in the black book.
Is there any reason you would NOT let someone play? Card counters are not allowed to play blackjack, but can play the others such as roulette, craps, and bacc. If one becomes too intoxicated, that may be a reason to "back them off" If a player becomes aggressive is another reason, but the previous two reasons, intoxication and aggressiveness are subjective and dependent on the player.
Forgive me for not knowing this, but how do you know if someone is counting cards? Very easy actually...it is all about how they bet and play...one does not necessarily know how to count to catch a card counter...in order for someone to be profitable at counting, they must have a large "bet spread" for instance a minimum bet of say $25 and a maximum of $500...one indication is if a person is betting: 25, 25, 50, 75, 500...that may be a sign...how one plays is another indication.
I know you don't make the rules, but it's such bullshit. They literally kick people out for using their brain to play a game. Yes and no...I see it from both sides...the advantage for a card counter is actually very small...it brings the advantage to slightly over 1%..so really it's a grind...and not automatic. A positive count for the player is also a positive count for the dealer. There have been times I've dabbled...got a 20 and the dealer pulls a 21.
Has anyone ever come into the casino in a disguise that had previously been 86ed for card counting? Not that I know of...I've never caught anyone like that...a good documentary about card counting is: HolyRollers
What gives the player the advantage is that the dealer is more likely to bust. And a 1-2% advantage is exactly what the casino's normal advantage over players who play basic strategy is. So for a counter to have that allows them to always be profitable in the long run. It's simple math. Yes...but it is a grind. It is not the romantic thing that I think people think it is. In the long run, absolutely a good counter will be profitable...but that counter will have put in a lot of hours and experience a lot of swings.
Thanks for doing this AMA. Your proof pic is a bit blurry, but I think I'm looking at a Cosmopolitan ID card there. If so, could you let me know a bit about the comp structure at the Cosmopolitan? I usually play blackjack, at $1000 per hand. What can I expect for my kind of play? Yes my proof is blurry and yes it's from the Cosmopolitan...for the comp structure I'll refer you to a co-worker, a host...I'll PM you his info later tonight, early Sunday morning...when you say $1000k a hand...I hope it means $1000 k a hand at least every hand.
Biggest tip you've gotten? In one night my crap table, which consists of 4 dealers made approximately 12k...my tips are usually accumulated throughout a night v. one big hand-in.
Has the casino you worked at ever done "shady business"? i.e. ripping off people, beating them? No beatings...they do not have to resort to "shady business" 1. all of the games have an advantage built in...most people now a days just come to party and not necessarily to "make money" very few people, I mean very few actually give themselves a fighting chance. They are just there to let loose and party. One practice some of the casinos have picked up which I do not like, but people still play is paying the 12 crap in the field double instead of the traditional triple...and playing blackjacks 6-5 instead of 3-2.
Are there any casinos left in LV that let dealers keep their own tips? In other words, a 'go for your own' house, rather than pooled tips? Yes...very few...Hooters and Silverton...If I wasn't getting out of the business, I would attempt to work at Silverton...I've talked to numerous "old timers" and of course goin for your own is far superior. I actually heard a co-worker describe recently working at the Silverton as making "score" as better than sex.
The current structure of "pooling" tips is the reason I went back to school 5 yrs ago and I'm getting out now.
What are the best and worst bets at the casino? The slot machines are terrible, the carnival games, such as Let it Ride, Three Card Poker are terrible...the best table game is baccarat, then craps (if played correctly)
What is the biggest, "No no," in a casino? Really touching any of the staff and the cards on a table and if someone reaches in the rack or towards it, even joking...they will get thrown out.
What are your favorite restaurants in Vegas? Romas on Spring Mtn...I've eaten at Hot 'n' Juicy Crawfish but was very intoxicated so I do not remember if I liked it or not. Lindo Michoacan on Trop is okay...I used to eat Ricardo's a lot on flamingo and decatur...on the strip...the Wynn and the Cosmopolitan buffet is awesome...Comme Ca is very good, Holsteins has a great beer selection as does Freaken Frogs across from UNLV on Maryland.
Cool, thanks. I was in Vegas last week and had no idea where to eat. Fortunately we got lucky with some Italian restaurant at the Cosmopolitan. I'll remember your picks for next time. Yea you probably ate at Scarpetta...I didn't mention it b/c I haven't eaten there yet.
What are the telltale signs of someone who's counting cards? An irregular, large bet spread and play. Splitting tens against a bust card with an enormous bet, and nothing but tens and aces show is a great indicator. When someone takes insurance on a dealer's Ace with a bad hand but a lrge bet is another.
What about splitting tens against a bust card with a normal bet? I love doing this at low limit tables. I normally wouldn't b/c you have a 20 and most likely will not improve your hand, but there are situations that say it is the play.
How many people ACTUALLY cheat? It actually happens more than you think...they do it in teams now-a-days...sometimes even the dealer is in on it...heres one
Whats the cleverest one you've seen. The cards at some casinos had a slight pattern that were barely noticeable and only when the cards were turned a certain way. Apparently some players from Asia recognized this, deposited a large amount of money in the casino bank and told the casino they wanted to play baccarat. They also stipulated they would only play if the dealer turned the cards a certain way before exposing the card...once the dealer did this one time through the deck...all of the cards were able to be read from the back...it is very confusing unless someone understands how baccarat is played.
Are you trained to catch a cheater? As a supervisor I took a class that taught some techniques and what to look for...what really prevents cheats is the fact that camaras are ubiquitous...and the dealers are taught "game protection" that prevents cheats. For instance in craps always making sure when the person shooting the dice always hit the back wall, the dice leave the shooters hand simultaneously, and both dice are airborne, in addition to the stick person always having his/her eyes on the dice.
I thought Baccarat cards were only used once. Normally yes...but I think they requested the same deck be used...yes this should've sent off a flag.
Shit, missed this ama.. I have some real questions here.. Fire away...I have about 20 mins b/f I leave for work.
Approximately 4 guys? Yea there was a group of guys together...it was about 3 yrs ago when I was dealing to them...cannot remember if it was 4 or 5 of them...but one of the guys did claim he lost about $2500.
Thanks for all this, by the way. No I am kind've a hard ass when I floor craps, so I nip shit in the but...only on video
How much do you make playing us rubes at poker after your shift ends? Man, gotta leave when the dealers pull up for happy hour, but you're so fun to drink with! I haven't played poker seriously in over two yrs...I've been finishing up my degree so I haven't had the time to invest.
Poker dealers are notorious for being loose.
What game do I have the best chance at winning? Baccarat then craps, in craps the way to play is a pass or don't pass bet with full odds...then a come bet or don't come bet again with full odds
Do you gamble? A little...all the bars in Vegas have machines at the counter...I'll put anywhere from $20 to $100 in...get free drinks and sometimes free food.
Do you have any experience with anyone having incredible/unbelievable luck and you're convinced that he/she isn't cheating? Actually pretty recently...some guy just got incredibly hot in blackjack and won about 90k...which was a lot compared to his normal play.
I honestly think I know these guys. Was it the week of CES? It was around that time, in January.
You ever been a dealer in the WSOP? No that's poker...I am a table games dealer, well supervisor now
Biggest tip you've ever gotten? Favorite casino game? Most someone has ever won at your table? Throughout a night I've made into the thousands Favorite game is craps Most won-over 100k.
How can card counting considered cheating? Isnt that a major dick move from the casino? "Oh you can't use your brains, you'll have to be dumb and lucky." It's not considered cheating, that is why one would not get into trouble for doing it...the only response the casino has is to refuse service *not allow you to play bj.
What's your stance/opinion on that Phil Ivey casino incident? Context: Link to www.thestar.com That was the same scam I spoke of earlier...with the card backs having a design issue...in my opinion, as long as no devices were used...it was the fault of the casino and the casino should take the hit...they were negligent. IMHO.
Do some dealers cheat? I know its harsh in Vegas, but what about more easy places like Cruise liners etc? Cheat for who? Dealers work on tips, more so than waitresses. So they are not gonna cheat so the player loses.
I just spent a weekend at Las Vegas [first time] with a client who curiously only played slots [to the level he got comp'd regularly]. It was a surreal experience. However since it looks like there will be repeat visits, it got me wondering: what would be the best way to go about learning a table game like blackjack and the best way to teach my [Jpn] client/friend? Ask the dealer...it is part of there job to help.
How much does the casino spend in card decks per day or month or whatever the period would be? How many decks is that? What about dice? Edit: corrected Swype mistake from Reddit Mobile. That I do not know.
How often do they replace dice? 8 hrs.
You get new dice every 8 hours? What do you do with the old ones? Some casinos sell them...others not sure.
Have you even been to the tunica casinos? If not, what have you heard about them? My grandfather always liked goin to Mississippi.
What is the highest amount of dough you've ever seen anyone lose? 1 million.
Holy shit... How pissed was he? He gets pissed when he loses... I've dealt and floored his games numerous times... He's pretty cool other than that.
What is your favorite non-cassino game to play, such as board games and video games? I love to play cards...euchre, all forms of rummy, knock, skat, spades...as for video games I pretty much only play Madden.
How rich is he? do you know what he does? I cant imagine losing a milly...even if i was rich. Whats the point?...i doubt he does it for the money. Maybe the rush? He's a professional gambler.
Obviously not professional enough, eh? ;-) I wouldn't go that far...people lose, even pros. He doesn't play craps professionally...but he is a professional gambler.
How much money does the casino have at any point inside the building ? It depends on the chips in play...differs from casino to casino.
By law a casino has to have enough money in hand to cover every bet in play on its floor, correct? Not sure what the exact percentage is...but it is stricter than our banking system, lol.
Ever hear of Steve Forte? No but I work with his son John.
Damn... To someone like me, He is royality. I'd pay good money to watch him shuffle.. Sounds weird, but its true. I'll ask John about it tonight.
1st, huge fan of your work, I love anything to do with chance or cards. 2nd, what is a good amount of money to bring into a casino? I've been making a Vegas fund and I need to know when I need to actually go. It depends on the amt of money you'd like to bet...usually around a couple thousand should be okay.
I've had guests tell great stories of there experiences with "working girls" as we call them. All the time...most guests do not know how to play...that is actually part of the dealers job description...helping/advising guests how to play the games One story was when approximately 4 guys were sharing a room...one of the guys got nearly blackout drunk, brought a worker upstairs to the room, he was so drunk, he passed out and the working girl made off with thousands of dollars.
That's the most hilariously sad story i've ever heard...thanks for the answers! Your welcome...another was when a guy was in with his wife...he picked up a girl at the table when his wife was elsewhere...he attempted to bring the girl to the room...on his way his wife happened to be waiting at their room door...when they got there the working girl kept walking(apparently with payment) that was a 2nd hand story but I definitely believe it.
Keep going! Lol...one guy had a terrible bite on his bicep...I asked him what happened...he told me he brought a girl upstairs...she began to pleasure him orally...he looked down and she had her hands in his pocket pants which were around his ankles looking for money...he went to grab her...she bit his arm and ran away.
Have u ever stacked a deck Never...not necessary...the casinos do not need to "stack the deck" the games are in their favor
Baccarat then craps, in craps the way to play is a pass or don't pass bet with full odds...then a come bet or don't come bet again with full odds wizardofodds
No that's poker...I am a table games dealer, well supervisor now It's a good way to get experience I've heard for those with little time dealing poker and want to get an in.
Throughout a night I've made into the thousands Favorite game is craps Most won-over 100k. I split my tips with every dealer working that day, so If I make a score, it doesn't matter...that's part of the reason I stopped dealing.

Questions Answers
Are you hiring? I'd love to move to Canada. Absolutely, We are looking for several positions and if you are sincerely looking for a job, message me :)
Does being a Casino Manager makes you keep your distance from gambling? AMAZING question, It actually makes it worse. I had never gambled a day in my life until I took that position. It is the same across the board. Never met another manager that doesnt gamble.
Will you quit this job if you had given the choice? I could not ask for a better job. Excitement every single day. Learing to control personal demons such as gambling and alcohol is always a fighting battle given the situation.
You are 100% right. U of Waterloo in Ontario conducted a study and they concluded that "casino employees exhibited rates of problem gambling that were over three times greater than rates that past studies have found in Ontario’s general population." -Link to uwspace.uwaterloo.ca. I know my stuff ;). It's a weird feeling.
What do you play, and wht stakes do you play ? Also.. Does your entire salary go straight back to the casino after payday? I like to play 1$ slots and blackjack for the most part. On blackjack my average bet is probably 60-75$. My salary does go back, but a portion of it does. I am pretty good at controlling myself, gets better by the year.
How is your daily routine in the casino?Do you get any perks? They pay my cell phone bill. I get paid any expenses you could imagine. I get free tickets and merchandise all the time. Golf passes dinners etc.
Have you ever caught someone counting in blackjack? Several times. With the security features we use, shuffle machines and cutting off 2-3 decks from the back, it's nearly impossible. Hell we will even teach you how to do it if you'll stay a while ;)
How did you get into the Casino business? I applied to become a dealer, years ago. I just worked my way up. Its an amazing business.
Ever had somebody die on your floor? Or at least horribly injured? Yes 2 people have died, one from a massive stroke, and another from a heart attack. We have had at least 25 heart attacks since I have worked there.
Do heart attacks happen more often when people win big or lose big? There has never been a direct correlation between winning/losing big and our patrons having heart attacks.
Interesting. Thanks for the response. Anytime :) I cant believe the responses already!
Statistically, you have the best chance of surviving a heart attack in a casino. The average response time drops from like 15 minutes in your home to something absurd like 30 seconds. We are very quick to react. This and we have first aid training as well as AED on site.
What the highest single bet you have witnessed? Here in Alberta, the maximum per spot on blackjack is 1000. I did witness a total table wager( by one player) Of 15,000. This was after he split 6 times and doubled once. He won evry wager on that hand.
Whats the luckiest person/win streak you have seen? (Not just 1 win but someone winning for a while or doing something crazy and it working) I watched someone win 24,000 on a slot machine. I reset his machine and he won 24,000 the next spin. I had the machine investigated by AGLC and all was well. He was 80 so I don't think he could cheat. Lol.
Do Casino's pump high levels of oxygen into the gambling areas, if so is that allowed? Have you ever caught anyone having sex or masturbating in the Casino? Do the Slot Machines ever get tampered with by cheaters? What is the penalty for tampering with slot machines? No we do not pump oxygen into the casino, It is not allowed. I had to fire an employee for masturbating in the customer bathrooms. Slots are rarely successfully tampered with, but it does happen quite often. The penalty is a fine and up to jail time. You can get in a LOT of trouble for trying something that is nearly impossible, like cheating a slot machine No problem :)
How...did you catch the guy spanking it? I fear to know yet I must ask for I can't think of a logical, sane way you caught the dude. I walked in to the washroom to check on the status of the last cleaning, and I caught him beating it with the stall door open... he forgot to lock it. was very obvious and he didnt even try to deny it.
Nobody forgets to lock the door when they are wanging it. He was off shift in 45 mins too... just couldnt wait.
It isn't illegal, what can the casinos do? We reserve the right to remove any patron at any time for any reason.
Do you still have to cash their chips if you kick them out? If they did not steal them, then Absolutely.
What is the best and worst part of your job? The best is seeing a person win big. The worst is seeing someone leaving in tears and me knowing they are broke and have kids.
Have you ever cut someone a break? Several times.
You've seen everything, have you seen Casino with Robert DeNiro in it and how accurate is that film? I have seen it, and I have yet to see a movie that ACTUALLY portrays a real casino whatsoever.
Most movies don't portray anything realistically. Good point. Casinos seem to be reallly far off though.
What about Croupier with Clive Owen.. good film.. Cant say ive seen it. Will watch.
What's the most desperate attempt to cheat in a casino you have ever seen? A guy in the middle of a hand, did not agree with the way a dealer "flipped" their hole card so he took his bets off the table (approx 1400$) and tried to pocket them before we could count what he had bet. He then tried to replace his bets after we asked with about 800$. It was very very easy to catch the amount that was originally on there. Cameras/pit boss/dealer all agreed to the exact amount. He was later found trying to cash out $600 in chips (after losing) lol.
That actually sounds pretty clever. He should have just gone for a smaller amount though. It wasnt bad. But he was on a high limit table with a lot of people watching
Any pranks you or your employees pulled? Yup, I am known as the prankster. I like to send new employees looking for left handed roulette balls or polish for the blackjack shoes. After they waste an hour or so I tell them. And they are laughed at by patrons and employees. Its all in good fun. Never had a complaint.
What happens to a cheater once you found them out? Is it just a case of the cops getting called straight away? I review the situation, and If I deem it cheating, a review is sent to AGLC and the patrons information gathered along with a police investigation. They will be prosecuted.
Do you catch cheaters? What were some cleveinvolved cheating schemes? I have caught cheaters, almost always at blackjack and threecard poker. The most common way they cheat is called "pressing". Having a partner distract the dealer for a second while they use slight of hand to add chips. Some people are very good at this, so good its tough to see on camera even.
To be clear.. what they do is when they have a good hand, someone distracts the dealer and the guy with the good hand attempts to increase his bet? What do you do when you catch something like that? We ban them Immediately. And other casinos recieve the memo an do the same.
Have you ever caught prostitution going on in the casino? What is the process of banning someone? Do they get put into a system? Do you have a banned wall? Yes we catch dirty prostitutes all the time. The ban process is easy. We take what info we have on them, take a recent photo from a surveillance screenshot and then post it to the banned wall :)
How is the security in the casino? Edit: no i'm not planning a robbery... The guards are pretty well trained. Also we have over 200 cameras. You are on camera within 1 KM of the casino. Also, all doors locked with special proxy cards that only have access to certain rooms, depending on position.
ONE KILOMETER? Are you kidding me? This is very secure, oh my. Cant tell if sarcasm. Detector is broken.
No sarcasm. This blows my mind. I always thought you guys have over the top security, but such a radius around your casino is mind blowing :). Great AMA btw, thanks for your time! I love the response im getting! This is awesome!
What is the process in working your way up from dealer to casino manager? How long did it take, what kind of background did you have prior to becoming a dealer? Also did you have to take any classes or anything like that either at an outside school or a company school to teach you all the ins and outs of the job? Did you ever think you'd be doing this or just sort of fall into it? What kind of responsibilities do you hold? I saw in your other posts that you mention throwing out people masturbating on the clock, helping people with gambling addictions and catching cheaters, but what is an everyday entail for you? I imagine you have to be a man with many hats (VIP guest liaison, worker ally, eyes for the bosses etc) Also last question I swear, what do you think of organized cheaters and the exposure they are getting such as Bringing Down the House/21 or the History Channel show on Breaking Vegas? It took me 4 years to get where I am. Went from dealer to pit boss to pit supervisor to games manager. I haven't taken any special courses really. Some training sessions but that's about it. You need to have the gift they say. As for responsibilities. I am in charge of running every department when I am on shift. And I am in charge of all the money. The movies have not done anything except make us money. People come in all the time thinking they will count cards and win, and we smash them.
In my expeirence, the 'Summon Technician' button rarely works. Thoughts? In my casino, it is attended to immediately. We are the only casino that I am aware of that does this.
Are employees allowed to gamble in the casino where they work? Or is just the manager that is allowed - I noticed you say you gamble off the clock. I live in England and am sure this is against nearly all casino policy. Only waitresses and guest services may gamble in our casino. No gaming worker is allowed to gamble in their own casino in alberta.
Any moral qualms sometimes? Never, Its a persons choice on what the wish to gamble.
Give it a few more years. I've got over that a long time ago. During my dealing days.
a follow up, sorry for that.. How do your co-workers react to yout gambling, does this make it awkward in any way? Actually, I tend to go to different casinos with my co-workers, awkwardness is never an issue.
Since you know a lot about security and cheating, do you know any loopholes in your or any other casino? Our casino is very secure. Some of the other casinos on the other hand..
For example? That I can't really disclose. Although. It's quite funny which one is the worst. I will leave it at that. I'm sure that comment alone will help some people.
Many years ago my mom had a gambling addiction. We werent sure how severe it was, we just thought she would go to the casino and have some fun and risk $200 or so. The casino hooked her in with the whole VIP treatment and rewards as an incentive to come back. One weekend she lost all her life savings ($300,000) It impacted our family a lot, as we were pretty much broke after she lost all our money. Even to this day we havent recovered, i missed out on college to work instead and been on my own since. My mom whos supposed to be close to retirement age is still working to support herself. I know casinos are for entertainment, but more often than not stories like this happen. How do you feel when a family is affected deeply because of gambling problems? Honestly that is the only hard part of the job. But after the years, I've become mostly desensitized to it.
Have you ever seen Ocean's Eleven? Did you just laugh and laugh and laugh? Not a fan of those movies :(
Have you ever been to Montecarlo? Do you think there are many differences between the european casino scene and the US/Canadian scene? Never been to Montecarlo, but from everything I have learned about it, It is very similar to our casinos in Canada (barring a few different table games). They have a lot of the same slot machines and their security is VERY high.
So, do you get hookers? Not once in my life.
Is there a certain amount of time that people are allowed to gamble before some sort of intervention takes place? (e.g. can't gamble for more than 24 hours straight, etc.) Our casino is only open for 17 hours at a time maximum. That is the law in this province. But under certain circumstances, we do offer help to people we notice becoming chronic gamblers.
What Kind of help do you offer out of interest? I get that the human factor is probably the reason its offered as the business side must actually like chronic gamblers. We offer councelling (not directly, but sources) and different programs such as VSE. VSE= Voluntary Self Exclusion. You will be excluded from gaming in ALL of Alberta. If caught in gaming facilities you can be arrested.
Favorite Ice cream flavor? Vanilla for the most part. Although I do like neopalitan.
Have you ever caught your employees stealing chips? Edit: i cant spell. I try to hire employees that I trust with the chips so that I dont have to worry about them. It has never happened to my knowledge.
You mentioned that you try to hire employees that are trustworthy with the chips etc. Do you have to run any criminal history checks, bankruptcy checks etc before you hire people? Do you use continuous shuffle machines to deal blackjack or do you deal from a shoe? If from a shoe, how many decks? How do you combat card counters? What is the food chain like? Here we have Dealers < Floor managers < Pit Bosses < Duty managers < Casino manager. Where do you fit in? How do the high rollers rooms work? Can someone walk in and flash cash to get in or do you need to gamble a certain amount first? What perks do high rollers get? Yes background checks and credit checks are run on ALL employees. We offer both continuous shuffles and shoes We use 8 decks and cut 3 off the back, as well as use a shoe cover. Very hard to count cards like that. In our casino I would be considered 2nd in line. High rollers are treated very well. Comped tabs etc. free trips to shows and all that jazz.
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head? Nope!
Ever seen a card cheat get his hand smashed by a ballpeen hammer ? Never had to use violence for a cheating patron. Drunk patrons on the other hand....
Great AMA! You answer almost everything! Thanks! I try to answer everything, I know i miss stuff but you guys comments lots! hard to keep up!
Here's my question: How do your responsibilities differ from a Pit Boss? Are you in charge of the food and alcohol people, too? How much time per shift do you spend on the floor and how much time do you spend interacting with individual guests? I am in charge of all departments when I am on shift. Pit boss is strictly in charge of the pit. I am always on the gaming floor interacting with guests. Its the best part of my job :)
Any suicides? I live near Niagara Falls and we hear stories all the time of people who blow it all in the casinos and take a dive over the falls. Yes unfortunately. :(
Are you from Edmonton by chance? If so care to comment why CH is still allowed to play in the poker rooms after being caught ripping off casinos with his bad beat scam? Not from edmonton, but I do know who you are talking about. It is the discretion of the casinos. He should be banned but they have failed to file charges.
They are still aware of what he did and as a pretty frequent player it sort of sucks having to sit at a table with someone you know was using dealers to set up bad beats.... You play at yellowhead?
How does the casino decide what background music to play? do you hate those songs now? I ususally pick it. I pick it depending on the majority of the crowd. (old people = classic rock, young people = new music.) We have lots of playlists it doesnt really get too bad.
I notice a lot of times my favorite slot machines are removed from the floor and never to be seen again. Do you guys store them in a basement or sell them to other casinos? Recycle them for parts? Machines are regulated by AGLC, they send us new ones and take old every week.
How long does training for croupier last? Are there opportunities for college students? Training is usually a month long. Its easier to get a job as a dealer if you are young. Young people seem to learn a lot easier.
What is the longest you've seen a customer play a machine? Any 24-hour slot machine marathons? Open to close 4 days in a row. (17 hours a day)
What is your coin-in on an average Saturday night? Biggest New Year's Eve coin-in you can remember? What's the average toke rate? Over 1.5 million. Best tip rate for a week was 30 ish.
How much do you make? What's your educational background? Edit: saw that you can't answer how much you make. So how'd you get into the job? I walked in an applied for dealer. They loved my attitude and hired me on the spot.
So you were hired as a dealer and then moved up in the ranks? Sounds like a sweet job and a managerial position involving actual job duties. Absolutely.
Just curious (and maybe you don't know)-- how exactly is the software sold for the newer digital games? Order "Three of Game A, three of game B" and remain stuck with it? Order them configured one way, but the software can be replaced for a token sum? If so, is it an in-house operation, or a "vendor service has to be called? They can load any firmware specced as compatible with the box? I notice there's always one or two machines in a bank of (physically) equivalent units which have an unpopular game (like the one which starts belting out Dean Martin songs at 600 decibels in attract mode) so they sit relatively unused, but they never change them. Is it laziness, cost, or technical limits? I dont deal with the digital games sorry!
The Ontario Lottery Corporation is in the process of rolling out an online casino. From an industry persepective, what are your views on online casinos? Is the software designed to give you gains but take back once you win-loss ratio is too high? Online casinos (legit ones) Run by pretty much the same stats as a real casino. Same odds of winning almost exactly.
Can you see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch? Its magically delicious, or wait.. damn lucky charms
What's a good starting job to get at a casino that will eventually get you into a managing position? Dealer is the absolute best.
Thanks for the swift response. No problem.
Just in case you are still answering at all...what's te stupidest/seemingly impossible thing you've seen/heard of a dealer doing? Most awesome/badass? I had a dealer deal a full table of blackjack entirely fucking backwards. I almost pissed myself no joke.
If some patron is winning a lot of money, would you kick them out? Say for instance a guy is playing Blackjack and went from 1000 dollars to 100000 dollars and wants to continue playing. He is literally just owning the table winning 9/10 hands. Would you kick this guy out or let him keep playing? Nope, its good in house advertising to have big winners :)
Not sure if this was asked already, but is there really oxygen pumped into the casinos like people say there is? Or is it just the shiny lights and excitement that will keep you going all night? No oxygen pumped in. Its the lights and atmosphere.
What was the most someone won in one night? 1.1 million dollars.
If I were looking to move to Vegas, how difficult do you think it'd be to get a decent paying job working in the casinos? I have a friend who moved there and is looking for a roommate, but I'm nervous about taking the step without a job lined up. As long as you have a good head on your shoulders and the motivation, its pretty easy to get into the business.
What''s your salary roughly? Thats actually the only thing im not willing to disclose. Sorry pal.
Who is your favorite porn star? Hootie McBoob.
Do casinos usually offer part-time jobs as croupiers? Always have part time positions open. Especially for weekends.
I saw that you didn't like Ocean's Eleven, but how did the guys get all those hooker flyers into the vault? Lol your guess is as good as mine ;)
1) How's the pay? 2) You already mentioned that you worked your way up from a dealer. Is there much higher that you can go? 3) How has the economic downturn affected business? The pay is great You can go to managing a whole casino, given time Business has actually gone up. Alberta isnt very effected by it.
How often do you feel like De Niro? Every day.
Are there or have there been times when you know someone is cheating or doing something "unethical" but you just can't get the evidence? If so, do they still frequent the casino? do you feel like they do it on purpose to piss you (the casino) off because they know that you know? I dont need evidence, if someone is suspected of cheating they are gone. AGLC backs us 100%
I live in vegas and recently a guy robbed a casino and stole like 100k of chips, whats the process of making sure he isnt able to cash those chips in. (He was wearing a mask) So does the casinos like remake all new chips or what? We track our 100$ chips very carefully. when people cashout 100 or more, we know about it. If we dont see them playing, we watch that person closely.
What is the best way to get a room comped for a weekend (I always seem to get Sun-Thur offers)? What is the average bet / hours required of play (assuming black jack)? Is it true you should expect 30% of your losses returned in the form of comps? I wouldnt count on getting 30%, maybe 5-10%. Average bet should be about 50-60$
Lots of questions have come up about players cheating, but what about the house? I know people who have seen casinos get busted for rigging games. I have certainly played at blackjack tables where the dealers seemed to have an uncanny ability to predict hands, I even once had a dealer reveal a blackjack without using the little peek thing. Dealt, asked for insurance (with great intensity), told us we should have taken the hint and flipper her card. Have you seen any cheating by the house or have any reason to think it happens? Never have I seen cheating by the house. I guarantee it doesnt happen in any legit casino in Canada. There are inspectors at all times. I truly believe that it doesnt happen. As a dealer myself I could "predict" my handsquite often. Because you do it so many times in one day you are bound to get it right.
How many bones have you witnessed being broken? or families ruined because of gambling everything away? a lot or a ton? Maybe 5 broken bones, probably 50 families :(
Have you ever felt the need to tell some poor old folks: "Take your welfare checks home." ? Nope, they usually play small just to pass the time. They are very nice.
How prevalent is patron on patron theft? For example, leaning over and grabbing a few of someone else's chips while they're not looking, or tapping their stack with a drink (which happens to have tape on the bottom) or things like that? Doesn't happen very often chip wise. But it does happen if people leave credits in a machine, drop money on the ground, or leave money in an ATM. We will hunt the patron down and force them to pay back the money.
Why do Asians gamble so much and where the hell do they get all of that money? I dont want to speculate where they get it..
What would be the best way to go about robbing a casino? Not trying ;). No one gets away.
What do you do with underage kids or kids with fake IDs? do they ever show up? Kick them out and file a report. If they have fake ID, file it with the police.
I went to the casino for my first time last week. Slots are boring as shit. Do you recommend a black jack guide to get the hang of things? Thanks. Always good to go in knowing basic strategy. check out wizardofodds.com.
How much do you earn on average yearly? Cant disclose that :(
What's your take on Scorsese's 1995 "Casino"? :D:D. Would watch again.
Did you read the novels by Mario Puzo about the inner workings of a casino? Would you say that they are accurate? Not yet, in process.
What's your favorite Canadian province besides Alberta? Ontario.
My question is why did you use a combination of Photoshop and real-life obfuscation for your badge? Carefully torn and placed pieces of pink and black tape, then some kind of 1990s-era Photoshop airbrushing around the perimeter... I was looking for something quick. And I never really used a site like this. I know, I suck.
What are your thoughts on the Martingale method of gambling on Red/Black in Roulette? I have had moderate success waiting for a run of 4 of one colour, then betting $25 on the opposite colour, then doubling each time until I win. Its a very bad system for the most part. you risk a lot to win a little.
How often do customers claim the dealer misheard/misinterpreted what they said to do? E.g.. the customer was playing blackjack, didn't want to hit, but the dealer misheard them and dealed them a card, which caused them to bust. 5 times a day at least. I usually give them the benefit of the doubt.
Are there any games that people can beat long run other than bj? You can't beat BJ in the long run. There is no way to make money.
Since Counting cards isn't illegal, if you catch someone do you still black ball them and tell all the other casinos? No. Unless they actually cheat, they aren't black balled.
What is the craziest thing you've seen? I answered this a little further down bud.
Have you ever seen a guy eat his own head? Hasn't happened to date..
Have you seen a live unicorn? Nope, it was dead.
What's the largest sum of money you've seen someone lose in one day? 100K on blackjack.
So you admit that you are a liar? EDIT: I do believe this means you have to forfeit your casino to me. Rules are rules I guess :(
Have you ever seen a queen in her damned undies, as the feller says? Once back in 06.
