Leafs Prospect Update: Part 1-4

Prospect Update | First Edition |

I thought I’d start up a new series of prospect updates to break up the offseason. I’ll be attempting to write about 3 players every week, as time permits.

Travis Dermott | Defence - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 20 | 5'11" 215 lbs | 2015 #34 TOR
After suffering a high ankle sprain shortly after starting his rookie season with the Marlies, Dermott took a while to really get into a groove. After struggling for about a month following his injury, he started to find his pre-injury form again.
After returning to form, Dermott quickly became the Marlies most impressive defenceman. While not putting up the most points, he was by far the most reliable man in his own end.
Some positives when mentioning Dermott’s game are his strong ability to separate opponents from the puck, whether it be with his stick, or his body. His defensive IQ and decision making are incredible, and he has a great point shot. Dermott quickly became a staple on the Marlies PP and PK because of these talents.
There are a few things Dermott is going to have to improve to successfully make the jump to the next level. His shot is great, but he needs to work on getting it through defending shin pads and bodies, as it was often deflected, or he deferred to his partners. He has gotten better at that, especially during the marlies playoff run, hopefully he can show some consistency and keep his successful shot rate up. Another thing he's going to have to work on is his skating. He’s a powerful skater, but on the slower end for his size, but after some extra attention from Barb Underhill, I think he’ll be fine.
When talking about Dermott, Keefe had this to say, “I don’t know that there is a better 20-year-old defenceman that is playing in our league. That is a really encouraging sign, obviously. He’s got a bright future.”

Seth Griffith | Wing - Shoots Right | Toronto Maple Leafs | Age: 24 | 5'9" 192 lbs | 2012 #131 BOS
“Too good for the AHL, but not quite good enough for the NHL”. That’s a phrase often heard when talking about Seth Griffith. After initially being acquired as a waiver pick up by the Maple Leafs, Griffith bounced around from team to team for half the year, after failing to successfully carve out his role on an NHL roster.
After short stints in Florida and Boston, Griffith settled into a role on the Marlies, trying to take advantage of a key role on the team, in what could be one of his last shots at making an impression with an NHL team.
In his half-season with the Toronto Marlies, Griffith put up over a point per game, being utilized on the first powerplay line, and was a real cog in generating offense on a line with Kerby Rychel and Colin Greening. Griffith’s playmaking ability at the AHL level is top notch, and his eye for the open man is above many players in the NHL.
The downside to Griffith’s game is that he relies on taking advantage of lots of open ice and sub par defending allowing him an extra split second of time and space that he doesn’t get at the NHL level. When given that extra space Griffith is extremely dangerous, but is easily shut down if you have defenders checking tight against him.
To succeed at the NHL level, Griffith will have to take his game to the next level by working on his ability to find open ice, and improve his leg strength, to make sure he’s less easily knocked around.

Andreas Johnsson | Wing - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 21 | 5'10" 184 lbs | 2013 #202 TOR
It took a few games for Andreas Johnsson to get his bearings in Toronto.
After being concussed from a blindside headshot, Johnsson spent the next few weeks recovering. After he was back at 100%, Johnsson spent the offseason working at his specially made offseason training regimen, given to him by the Maple Leafs physio staff.
In the first 2 games of the 2016-2017 season, Johnsson picked up 3 powerplay goals, but picked up just 2 assists in the following 14 games. After his slow start, Johnsson adjusted to the smaller ice, and changed his game up a bit. He was still taking advantage of his above average shot, but also making sure to get in tighter around the net and fight for rebounds. Finding success in his new offensive style, Johnsson stuck to it, and manages to sneak in tight, and battle for his goals, despite being one of the smaller players on the ice.
In an interview, Sheldon Keefe was asked about Johnsson’s face after a fight. “He [Johnsson] seems to get hit with more sticks and pucks than anyone. He got in that fight, but there is never a shortage of wounds on his face. He earns every one of them because he gets down and he gets physical and gets involved in so many things.”
His strength is going to have to improve to do this at the next level, but it looks like Johnsson will fight for every inch.

Prospect Update | Second Edition |

Andrew Nielsen | Defence - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 20 | 6'3" 220 lbs | 2015 #65 TOR
Andrew Nielsen had a pretty good first year in the AHL this year. While he was prone to pinching too often, being beat to the outside in the neutral zone, and making often questionable defensive decisions, his offense more than made up for it in it’s overall effect on the team.
In the defensive zone, his strengths are his size and his active stick. While occasionally caught puckwatching, he usually recovers well when he doesn’t have the puck because of these things.
Sheldon Keefe had great things to say about Nielsen’s ability to grow his game and play under pressure towards the end of the Marlies season this year, “He has taken real big strides in the last month of the regular season and a bigger one in a tough playoff series (against Albany),” said Keefe. “He plays under pressure. It was big for our team to be able to put him on the ice consistently and have confidence that he is going to be able to play through pressure and make plays.”
Unquestionably, Nielsen’s biggest asset is his offensive ability. He has a great shot, which if I had to compare his shooting to anyone, I would say it would be Cody Franson. He has a great ability to get pucks through to the net, whether it’s with a slap shot, or his accurate wrist shot.
He’s going to need to work on his skating (stride, backwards, and crossovers), overall strength, and in general get further adjusted to the speed of the pro game, but I believe with a couple years of seasoning in the AHL, Nielsen has the ability to be an NHL defender. Whether that be as a 5-6 powerplay specialist, or a mainstay on the top 4, only time will tell.

Kerby Rychel | Wing - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 22 | 6’1" 210 lbs | 2013 #19 CBJ
Once considered a likely top 6 power forward, in the mold of JVR or Blake Wheeler, Kerby Rychel is now on the outside looking in at the NHL picture.
Coming in to the Marlies, a lack of growth to his game, and no real defined role on his previous teams had left Rychel’s game stagnant. At the start of the year, Rychel seemed like he was trying too hard to carve out a role as the team’s tough guy, getting in several fights in the first few weeks of the season, including a couple in the preseason as well.
It took a couple months for Rychel to really find his role on the Marlies team, as Toronto’s coaching staff tried to guide him back into being the power forward that Columbus hoped they were getting when they drafted him. After his slow start Rychel ended up being the Marlies leading point scorer. With an impressive stretch of 20 points in 21 games during the midpoint of the season. Rychel’s strengths are his strong net front presence, his ability to finish in tight, and his willingness to battle opponents hard along the boards. When he is playing hard, he is a very tough guy to play against. He’s willing to battle as hard as it takes, and he’s no stranger to dropping the gloves.
Rychel seems most likely to end up as a bottom 6 forward, due to his lack of a real “break out” season, or improvement on the skills he developed over the last couple years in the AHL.
I don’t see Rychel starting the season with Toronto next year, as he still has some value and is likely to be taken in the expansion draft by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Dmytro Timashov | Wing - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 20 | 5'10" 194 lbs | 2015 #125 TOR
With a log jam of talented wingers, Dmytro Timashov was left as the odd man out many nights towards the start of the year, which didn’t help his development. Timashov struggled for the first few months in the AHL, relegated to the 4th line, playing under 10 minutes a night for the first half of the season, Timashov may as well have started his season with the Solar Bears.
Around halfway through the year, Timashov really picked up his game, whether that was due to the midseason fatigue he managed to avoid by playing so little for the first half of the season, or just growth in his game after playing at the AHL level so long, we’ll have to find out next year, but for the last half of the season, he looked much more like he did at the QMJHL level. Dominant and able to make the puck go wherever he’d like it to.
Timashov is going to have to train hard this offseason to jump some of the other Marlies on the depth chart, but I firmly believe that he is one of the teams better prospects. Some of the things he’s going to have to work on are his shot strength, he’s going to have to get better at picking the puck from opposing players with the puck, hopefully he can pick up some tips from William Nylander.
For Timashov’s strengths, there’s his ability to have the puck on a string. He’s got great stickhandling and puck guarding ability. He’s got explosive skating, one second he can be at a stand still, and in just a couple strides, he’ll be at top flight. It makes him very dangerous offensively. Timashov’s biggest strength though, has to be his puck moving ability. He’s got elite vision, and is able to make plays that most players wouldn’t even see. I wouldn’t compare his passing to Marner, who is another elite passer, but more like Martin St Louis.

Prospect Update | Third Edition |

Carl Grundstrom | Wing - Shoots Left | Frolunda/Toronto Marlies | Age: 19 | 6'0" 194 lbs | 2016 #57 TOR
After being picked in the draft, Carl Grundstrom spent most of his 2016-2017 season playing for Frolunda, where he put up a respectable 20 points in 45 games, leading all players under 20 years of age.
Grundstrom’s biggest offensive asset is his ability to come up with the puck down low on the forecheck. He uses his short but stocky frame to effectively shield the puck from opposing players. He’s got great hands in tight around the net, he always seems to have his stick in the right spot, and is great at predicting where a puck is going to end up.
Another of Grundstrom’s strengths is his ability to adjust. He can play all up and down the lineup in the SHL and AHL so far. He’s proven himself trustworthy for defensive minutes and powerplay time. Grundstrom made a seamless transition from the SHL to the AHL, taking hardly any time to get up to speed putting up 4 points in just 6 games.
Immediately following his insertion into the lineup, Grundstrom was one of the Marlies most impactful players during their playoff run. Keefe had some praise for Grundstrom when he was brought up during the Marlies run, “It’s been good for us and the organization to get to know him a bit better,” Keefe said. “He’s a guy that goes to the net. He’s smart. And he’s competitive. He’s not afraid. It’s good to see him get rewarded. He seems to play better after he scores.”
He’s going to need to work on his skating, Grundstrom lacks that extra separation gear that’s going to allow him to mesh well with the rest of Toronto’s high-octane offense. There are a few inefficiencies in Grundstrom’s stride to work out, he’s got to work on getting more power out of his crossovers and work on smoothing out his stride a little more.

Garret Sparks | Goaltender - Catches Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 23 | 6’3" 206 lbs | 2011 #190 TOR
Updated from last years prospect update
The son of an architect father and stay-at-home mother in Elmhurst, Sparks grew up a hockey fan, but not of the Blackhawks, instead he grew up watching the Dallas Stars.
Always known as a bit of an underdog, Sparks was picked in the seventh and final round of the 2011 NHL draft. He was an eighth-round selection in junior. He never let that stop him though, in his last season with Guelph he set Storm franchise records for regular-season shutouts (seven) and victories.
When talking about his love of hockey, Sparks had this to say,
“I couldn’t go a day without (hockey),” Sparks said. “I don’t always have to be on the ice. I don’t always have to be playing with my friends. But at the end of the day, I can be on a lake in the summertime and all I think about is hockey. It’s not even a love-hate relationship. It’s just constantly there. Things go wrong in life and you’re not always the happiest. But at the end of the day you get a fresh sheet of ice and nothing can bring you down.”
To his teammates, and people that follow him on twitter, Sparks is a man with endless opinions, and ideas. The Buffalo Sabres’ newly released third jersey makes the Sabres’ much-mocked “Buffaslug” logo look “like a Picasso.” Young men who expressed disappointment with the recent engagement of Paulina Gretzky were delusional: “You never had a shot with her & you can still follow her on Instagram,” Sparks tweeted. “Your relationship hasn’t changed.”
Not just known for his opinions, Sparks is also quite well known for his on ice antics (3 separate links in “on ice antics”)

Scouting Report

The first thing you’ll notice when looking at Garret Sparks numbers is that they have gotten better every single year since he was drafted in the 7th round of the 2011 draft. He transitioned well from the OHL into the AHL, and subsequently back to the ECHL after injury.
In 2013, Sparks first pro season he saw 21 games, and put up a pretty impressive .915 save percentage. His transition to the step up in competition in the AHL was smooth, and Sparks adjusted to the pace quickly.
Leading up to the 2014 regular season, Sparks got injured in a Leafs preseason game, which caused him to lose out in the goaltender race between Sparks, Bibeau, and Christopher Gibson. Rather than have him play backup in the AHL, Kyle Dubas made the choice to send sparks down to the ECHL, to get a starters load, and develop his game with the Orlando Solarbears.
His numbers make it obvious that Sparks is too good for the ECHL, as Sparks put up a .936 save percentage, which was the highest in the league, by a .12 margin. He put up these numbers while playing on a floundering Orlando team that was regularly outshot, outplayed, and out possessed. Almost singlehandedly Sparks drug the team into the 8th and final spot for the playoffs. One thing you’ll notice when watching Sparks game is that he is a very good blocking goaltender. Similar to Leafs netminder James Reimer, he will do anything to put his body in front of the puck. He may not always control the rebound, but very, very rarely will he miss the first shot. Sparks has great vision, agility and second effort, but the things he’ll need to work on in the coming season though, are his rebound control, and shot positioning.
2017 UPDATE
Sparks spent much of the 2016-2017 season injured, and stuck behind Marlies flop and future free-agent fodder, Antoine Bibeau, due to off ice issues. Due to his limited ice time, Sparks never really managed to find the groove he had when he was getting consistent strings of games in previous years.
His strengths are his size, lower body flexibility, and his willingness to throw his body around to make second effort saves.
He needs to work on the quickness of his lateral movements when tracking pucks, and continue to work on his rebound control and recovery.

Trevor Moore | Wing - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 22 | 5'10" 183 lbs | Undrafted
After going undrafted in his eligible years, Trevor Moore finished his college hockey career with impressive numbers, putting up 44 points in 40 games with the University of Denver.
Moore was placed alongside two other scoring phenoms, Danton Heinen and Dylan Grambell, on a line that provided the majority of Denver’s offense.
During the offseason, Moore signed a 3 year entry level contract with Toronto, under the understanding he would be developing with the Marlies.
It took a little bit for Moore to become comfortable with the Marlies, as he struggled out of the gate. After his slow start, he took advantage of injuries in the lineup to move his way up through the lines, relishing his opportunity. Moore used his quickness, great passing and puck handling ability to quickly carve out a niche for himself on the Marlies team.
Moore has a great skillset. I touched on it there, but the way he handles the puck reminds me of Johnny Gaudreau. He often takes advantage of his speed to back off defenders, and his great hands which he uses to fire off a wicked wrister, and also make passes that most players wouldn’t even see. He has excellent east-west skating ability, and is very tricky with his feet, managing to fool defenders with his fakeouts.
T. Moore’s biggest weakness is his lack of size and strength. To continue to improve, Moore is going to have to spend a lot of time in the weight room, working on his leg strength and conditioning to help him battle against players at the next level.

Prospect Update | Fourth Edition |

Adam Brooks | Center - Shoots Left |Toronto Marlies | Age: 21 | 5’11" 176 lbs | 2016 #92 TOR
Adam Brooks has spent most of his hockey career battling adversity. Told that he was too small, or too slow for his size, Brooks took those comments and used them as motivation to work even harder to achieve his hockey dream.
After having a mediocre draft year and being passed over in the draft as an 18 year old, Brooks came back the next year and tore up the league, putting up 120 points in 72 games. In the 2016 draft, the Leafs took a flier on the Manitoba native. So far it’s paid off tremendously, with him improving to 130 points in 66 games, while simultaenously developing his defensive game.
Brooks was given more defensive responsibility in the 2016-2017 season than he was previously used to, and adjusted without faltering, averaging about 19 minutes a night while playing heavily at both ends of the rink.
The level of production Brooks had at the WHL is almost unheard of. He has had the highest assists in the league for the last 2 years running, and holds the single season assist record dating back to 1996-1997.
Among Brooks talents are his While Brooks has an innate ability to draw defenders in to him, to open up space for his teammates, he also has the ability to slip in and out of the play unnoticed, ready to appear just at the right moment to collect the puck and either make a seeing eye pass with his incredible vision, or fire home a wrister with laser accuracy.
One thing Brooks is going to have to work on is his situational awareness when it comes to taking a hit to make a play. Often times, Brooks will place himself in a vulnerable position to complete a play, to the risk of his own health. At the pro level, Brooks is going to have to adjust his idea of when that play will be worth it, and when it won't.
Similar to Connor Brown, Brooks is heralded for his strong work ethic on and off the ice. If Brooks is able to duplicate anything like Brown's rookie AHL season, we'll have a very exciting player on our hands.
To reach his potential, Brooks is going to need to prove that he is capable of playing at the AHL level. He’ll probably need at least 2 years seasoning before he starts to get a real look at the NHL, provided his development goes as planned.

Kasimir Kaskisuo | Goalie - Catches Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 23 | 6’3" 201 lbs | Undrafted
Spending his teen years developing in Finland, playing in Jokerit’s system, Kaskisuo decided to make the jump to North American hockey after going relatively unnoticed playing behind Joonas Korpisalo. After making the jump to the NAHL, Kaskisuo quickly caught the eyes of college scouts and ended up committing to the university of Minnesota-Duluth.
What ended up attracting a lot of eyes to Kaskisuo was his highlight reel behind-the-back save. Toronto probably ended up watching him more than most teams with former prospects Tony Cameranesi and Dominic Toninato also playing for Minnesota-Duluth, and it showed. “it was an easy decision to come here (because of) what they offered and how bad they wanted me here and how often they were calling,” [Kaskisuo] said.
Kaskisuo’s biggest advantage is his quickness given his size. His feet are quick to dart out and make a stretching pad save. He has to work on not overcommitting to shooters or going down too early, as it’s become a glaring weakness in his game. His positioning is suspect, and he’s prone to make the occasional mental error a la Jonathan Bernier.
Another of Kaskisuo's weaknesses is his consistency. Like many young goaltenders, Kaskisuo will look like a worldbeater one period, and then leave you scratching your head, wondering how he made it this far the next.
If Kaskisuo can learn to move less, and work on making more positional saves rather than relying on athleticism, he'll have a much better chance at succeeding at this level.
After his contract ends, I don’t see the Leafs re-signing Kaskisuo, they will probably let him walk, similar to other failed experiments in Rynnas, Bibeau, and Owuya.

Frederik Gauthier | Center - Shoots Left | Toronto Marlies | Age: 22 | 6'5" 238 lbs | 2013 #21
Freddy Gauthier being drafted 21st overall is a perfect example of the mindset of the former Maple Leafs management, prior to the Shanahan takeover. He’s tall, not quick by any means, and isn’t particularly offensively gifted.
What Gauthier does have in abundance is defensive skill, maturity beyond his age, and a very strong work ethic, leading me to believe he’s only going to continue to get better with age.
Gauthier is likely to be a late bloomer due to the fact that he didn’t take hockey seriously up until 4 years before his draft year. In the past 2 years developing the AHL and NHL, his stats have only improved.
Both Keefe and Babcock have learned to lean on Gauthier in the defensive zone. Starting the majority of shifts in the defensive zone, Gauthier maintains a relatively even Corsi, despite being saddled with other anchors like Matt Martin, and has improved his faceoff percentage to above 50% as one of the youngest players in the league to do so.
While he’s not the strongest skater, Gauthier has come leaps and bounds since his draft day. His skating stride and movements are much cleaner now. The difference is almost night and day.
Gauthier is going to have to learn to use his size more effectively to really develop into the role that the Leafs are looking to mold Gauthier into.
If Gauthier returns from his injury with no ill effects and continues to develop at his current pace, he will turn into a very reliable fourth line center for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

ACC Rundown

I don't have time to do write ups for the entire nation like I used to, so in recent years I have picked the conference that interests me the most. This season's ACC is a murderer's row from a talent perspective, and one of the deepest conferences I've ever come across in the preseason. At the same time, all the top squads are all seeing significant changes to their core rotations. I don't see a single team other than Duke that feels like a safe pick in their respective tier. Trying to predict how it all comes out should be next to impossible, so naturally I am compelled to give it a shot.
Please keep in mind that I have put the teams into tiers because I really don't have a strong opinion on one team over another in a specific group. If I did have a strong opinion, I would have given that squad its own tier. The one exception to this might be the massive middle tier, where I suppose you could say I think the top couple of teams are better than those at the bottom, but the overall principle still holds.
(15/16 and 16/17 projected starters in bold, recruit 247 sports composite ranking in parentheses if they are in the Top 200)

Tier 1 - The Heavyweight (trip to final four in the cards)

1. Duke Duke Blue Devils Duke

(ly KenPom #20 (25-11 overall, 13-5 ACC, Sweet 16)
Notable Losses PG Derryck Thornton (tr-USC), F Brandon Ingram(NBA), C Marshall Plumlee (gr)
Notable Returnees SG Grayson Allen, SG Luke Kennard, SG Matt Jones, F/C Amile Jefferson
Notable Newcomers G Frank Jackson(13), SF Jayson Tatum(4), PF Harry Giles(2), PF Javin DeLaurier (39), C Marques Bolden(15)
Favorites because... ...an incredible confluence of returning talent and the nation's elite freshmen practically tripping over themselves to sign on with Team USA's head coach. Giles is a generational talent if healthy, Tatum isn't far behind. Bolden is way better than people realize. Grayson Allen could flop his way to a NPOY award, provided he can keep his feet to himself. The supporting cast of returnees that would star on virtually any other team, but are blessed with skillsets uniquely suited to play complementary roles.
Could trip up if... Jackson, more of scorer than facilitator, isn't quite ready to take over for the departed Thornton. There are a lot of mouths to feed in this lineup. K's deepest frontcourt since late 90's / early 00's, will he stick with his tendency to play small? I'm reaching here...
Schedule Analysis Average 2x opponents on the easy side, trip up road games @Va, @Syr, @Lou
Verdict One of the heaviest heavyweights in recent memory, anybody expecting less than a final four run is straight trippin

Tier 2 - Contenders if Things Go Well

2. North Carolina North Carolina Tar Heels North Carolina

(ly KenPom #2 (33-7 overall, 14-4 ACC, NCAA Runner Up)
Notable Losses G Marcus Paige (gr), PF Brice Johnson(gr)
Notable Returnees PG Joel Berry, PG Nate Britt, G/F Justin Jackson, G/F Theo Pinson, PF Isaiah Hicks, C Kennedy Meeks
Notable Newcomers G Seventh Woods (48), G/F Brandon Robinson (60), C Tony Bradley (26)
Contenders because... ... 4 potential all-conference returnees got championship level experience last March. Berry and Hicks made huge strides and should be ready to take over starring roles, with Hicks in particular earning rave reviews this offseason. Jackson was a lethally effective glue guy despite struggling with his shot, and a potential AA if he can hit from the outside the way he did as a high schooler. This becomes even more important given non-shooter Pinson moving into the starting lineup.Three talented newcomers get the luxury of learning from the vets as freshmen.
Could fall short if... ...the returnees don't adjust well to feature roles, after the graduation of consummate leaders/winnters Paige & Johnson. Roy's teams always start slow, could be worse than usual this year. A high floor here, but top end of expectations will require individual improvement from all the returnees.
Schedule Analysis Difficult 2x vs Duke and Virginia; relatively easy road slate
Verdict Might not have the upside that the national top 5 teams have, but the roster is still loaded.

3. Virginia Virginia Cavaliers Virginia

(ly KenPom #3 (29-8 overall, 13-5 ACC, Elite 8)
Notable Losses G/F Malcolm Brogdon (gr), PF Evan Nolte (gr), F/C Anthony Gill (gr),G/F Mike Tobey (gr)
Notable Returnees PG London Perrantes, G Devon Hall, G Darius Thompson, SF Marial Shayok, F Isaiah Wilkins,
Notable Newcomers G Ty Jerome (43), G Kyle Guy (37), SF DeAndre Hunter (91), PF Jay Huff (59), F/C Austin Nichols (tr-Memphis), F/C Mamadi Diakite (33 in 2015)
Contenders because... ... Bennett mixes a core of veteran roleplayers who have played deep into March with an epic breakthrough on the recruiting path. Nichols should replace Gill without a hitch, a capable multiple level scorer on offense and shot blocking threat on defense. Perrantes is as steady as they come as a senior. Jerome and Guy simply make sense as Bennett players, and will eventually dazzle on the national stage.
Could fall short if... ...the ultra talented newcomers aren't quite ready for the intricacies of Bennett's system, and the returnees remain limited as roleplayers. It is important to remember that what makes Virginia great is further removed from what makes a recruit coveted than is typical of most programs. The talent level is probably the best Bennett has ever had, but will the youngsters defend at the level he demands? An elite but raw talent like Diakite could start, and he could also find himself completely outside the rotation.
Schedule Analysis Difficult 2x vs UNC, Louisville, Va Tech and Pitt, just nasty
Verdict A lot of new roles to determine early on and a brutal conference schedule, but it isn't wise to bet against the Hoos

4. Louisville Louisville Cardinals Louisville

(ly KenPom #10 (23-8 overall, 12-6 ACC, self-imposed postseason ban)
Notable Losses G Trey Lewis(gr), G/F Damion Lee (gr), C Chinanu Onuaku, (NBA)
Notable Returnees PG Quentin Snyder, G Donovan Mitchell, SF Deng Adel, PF Raymond Spalding, PF Jaylen Johnson, C Mangok Mathiang, C Anas Mahmoud
Notable Newcomers PG Tony Hicks (tr-Penn), G/F VJ King (27)
Contenders because... ... Much like UNC, Louisville returns a core of talent more than capable of taking over feature roles for a high level ACC team. Sophs Mitchell, Adel and Spalding should all be on national breakout player lists, with Mitchell sure to become a national favorite as a classic Pitino style guard - hard nosed, physical and ultra explosive. King has legitimate NBA upside on the wing, while veterans Snyder and Mathiang will provide steady veteran presence.
Could fall short if... ...the sophs aren't quite ready for the larger roles they have never played at this level. The Cardinals were not a good offensive team last year, and their top 3 shot creators are gone. I would guess Pitino is emphasizing skill development this fall, as Mitchell, Adel and Spalding were all still in need of refining the last time we saw them. Mathiang and Mahmoud are both coming off major injuries.
Schedule Analysis Difficult 2x vs Virginia, Syracuse, ND and Pitt; Pitino probably would have preferred an easier slate for his untested squad
Verdict It might take some time, but Pitino will get it figured out.

5. Syracuse Syracuse Orange Syracuse

(ly KenPom #24 (23-14 overall, 9-9 ACC, Final Four)
Notable Losses PG Kaleb Joseph (tr-Creighton), SG Trevor Cooney (gr), G/F Michael Gbinije (gr), G/F Malachi Richardson, (NBA)
Notable Returnees G Franklin Howard, PF Tyler Roberson, F/C Tyler Lydon, C DaJuan Coleman
Notable Newcomers PG John Gillon (tr-Colorado St), G/F Tyus Battle (36), SF Andrew White (tr-Nebraska), PF Trevor Thompson (74), C Paschal Chukwu (tr-Providence)
Contenders because... ...despite appearing to be in serious trouble after Richardson surprised everybody by playing his way in the first round of the draft, Boeheim recovered at the last possible moment with the addition of White. Likely starting PG Gillon was a liability if forced to play a feature role, but is a deadly shooter who could thrive next a shot creator like White. Lydon is another player who wasn't a natural for a shot creator role, but is an elite of the elite floor stretcheshot blocker combo primed for a breakout year. He could combine with Chukwu to form the best shot blocking duo in the nation.
Could fall short if... ...all the new pieces don't fit, with perhaps even more risk than Virginia and Louisville. The backcourt is the most at risk here, with White arriving late and only 4 scholarship bodies, meaning there is no room for an injury, eligibility issue, off the court snafu, or even chemistry issues.
Schedule Analysis Cakewalk I'm not sure what the schedulemakers were thinking giving the Orange return games against both bottom feeders, but it is a huge edge.
Verdict The backcourt hasn't played together and is extremely shallow, but the pieces are there for Syracuse to improve significantly on last year's .500 ACC finish

Tier 3 - NCAA Tournament Bound (in any other conference)

6. NC State NC State Wolfpack NC State

(ly KenPom #74 (16-17 overall, 5-13 ACC, No Posteason)
Notable Losses PG Anthony Barber (NBA), SF Caleb Martin, (tr-Nevada), SF Cody Martin (tr-Nevada), F/C Lennard Freeman (injury redshirt)
Notable Returnees G/F Maverick Rowan, PF Abdul-Malik Abu, C Beejay Anya
Notable Newcomers PG Dennis Smith (7), PG Markell Johnson (58), SG Terry Henderson (tr-West Virginia), G/F Torin Dorn (tr-Charlotte), C Omer Yurtseven (Int), F/C Ted Kapita (56),
Will dance because... ...Mark Gottfried's heroic recruiting effort has upgraded the talent to levels rarely seen at NC State. Smith a video game style dunker in the mold of Stephon Marbury, and even coming off an ACL surgery was so impressive at Adidas nations this summer he's now showing up as the #1 pick on many preseason mock drafts. Yurtseven will make Abu's life a lot easier on the interior, while the wing rotation of Rowan, Dorn and Henderson should provide excellent floor spacing.
Could fall short if... ...inexperience and locker room woes become an issue. Chemistry has been a near constant problem for Gottfried, even dating back to his days at Alabama, and this year's well traveled group probably isn't the one you'd expect to reverse that trend. The buzz is that this group will play better together, but Smith is the type who might try to win games by himself (and probably succeed at it). Eligibility concerns do exist for Yurtseven and Kapita.
Schedule Analysis Easy Return games vs WF and Ga Tech will help
Verdict Gottfried will have to earn his salary this year melding all the youngsters and other newcomers, but the Wolfpack are as talented as anybody outside of Duke.

7. Clemson Clemson Tigers Clemson

(ly KenPom #48 (17-14 overall, 10-8 ACC, No Posteason)
Notable Losses PG Jordan Roper (gr), C Landry Nnoko (gr)
Notable Returnees G Avry Holmes, SG Gabe Devoe, F Donte Grantham, PF Jaron Blossomgame, C Sidy Djitte
Notable Newcomers PG Shelton Mitchell (tr-Vanderbilt), SG Marcquise Reed (tr-Robert Morris), G/F Scott Spencer (183), C **Elijah Thomas (tr-Texas A&M)
Will dance because... ...Jaron Blossomgame decided to pass up a gtd NBA contract to try and finally push Brad Brownell's Tigers over the hump. Not the most traditionally talented lineup, but there is a legit all-america candidate, several experienced rotation players, and a trio of extremely talented transfers. Thomas could be the real difference maker as the type of legitimate post scoring presence that hasn't been seen at Clemson in years.
Could fall short if... ...Thomas' issues follow him from Texas after he becomes eligible mid-year. The Glen Davis-style big man was once considered a future NBA player, but injuries and difficulty controlling his emotions on the court dropped him in the rankings by the time he was a senior. His time at Texas A&M was short, as he jumped ship after not landing a starting job immediately as a freshman. Brownell also needs better perimeter shooting from his guard rotation, though Holmes, Reed and DeVoe certainly have the ability to better stretch the floor.
Schedule Analysis Easy No return matchups against the top 2 tiers, also get WF and Ga Tech 2x
Verdict There are questions about just how high the ceiling is here, but the easy schedule tips Clemson above several comparably talented middle of the pack squads. Thomas' ability to contribute will decide things.

8. Virginia Tech Virginia Tech Hokies Virginia Tech

(ly KenPom #57 (20-15 overall, 10-8 ACC, NIT 2nd round)
Notable Losses G/F Jalen Hudson (tr-Florida)
Notable Returnees PG Justin Robinson, G Seth Allen, G Devin Wilson, SG Ahmed Hill, G/F Justin Bibbs, PF Chris Clarke, PF Zach LeDay, C Kerry Blackshear
Notable Newcomers SF Charles Outlaw (rs/juco)
Will dance because... ...unlike virtually every other team on this list, the Hokies have nearly their full rotation back. Like most Williams-coached squads, Virginia Tech is a bit undersized but not lacking in toughness. LeDay was a surprise impact transfer and one of the most accomplished returnees in the conference. Clarke suffered a midyear injury, but is a classic Williams-style forward and was causing major problems for opponents by the end of the year. Bibbs is one of the top marksmen in the conference, while Hill and Outlaw return from injury. Blackshear showed enough as a freshman to envision a more traditionally sized lineup if Williams wants to head that direction.
Could fall short if... ...the ball doesn't bounce their direction. The Hokies are likely to be in a lot of close games - they don't have a very high ceiling, but the floor is relatively high as well given all the returnees from last year's competent squad. The middle of the pack is likely to be seperated by only a couple of games, and no team is more likely to be in the middle of that pack than Virginia Tech. Can the Hokies close out tight games against evenly matched opposition?
Schedule Analysis Average Not too bad, considering their 1 return game against a top tier opponent is vs in-state rival Virginia.
Verdict Expect to see Buzz Williams back to where he is supposed to be this March - sweating through his shirt on your television

9. Notre Dame Notre Dame Fighting Irish Notre Dame

(ly KenPom #35 (24-12 overall, 11-7 ACC, Elite 8)
Notable Losses PG Demetrius Jackson (NBA), F/C Zach Auguste (gr)
Notable Returnees PG Matt Farrell, SG Steve Vasturia, G/F Rex Pflueger, SF VJ Beachem, SF Matt Ryan, PF Bonzie Colson, C Martin Geben (non-rotation in 15/16)
Notable Newcomers G Temple Gibbs (87), F Elijah Burns (RS), PF John Mooney (148)
Will dance because... ...Mike Brey doesn't reload, he rebuilds. Year after year, he finds elite skill players for his specific brand of basketball, turning run of the mill recruits into featured cogs in one of the nation's most high octane offenses. This year the burden falls to 3 upperclassmen. Beachem has the highest upside of anybody on the team and is in for a huge senior season given the need for a feature scorer. Colson is undersized, but a matchup nightmare capable of putting up big numbers if not accounted for. Sophs Pfleuger and Ryan have the potential to develop into legitimate floor stretchers.
Could fall short if... ...they aren't able to compete physically. The Irish are typically at a physical disadvantage against top ACC opponents, but 16/17 will test Brey's ability to overcome those limitations like no year in recent memory. Gibbs looks like a decent replacement for Jackson, but early reports of the ineffective Farrell having the inside track on the starting job aren't encouraging. The froncourt is even worse - Colson's size wasn't a problem with a legit C next to him, but Auguste is gone. Apparently Geben has the inside track on the job, but he wasn't even in the rotation last year.
Schedule Analysis Cakewalk Four automatic wins over BC and Georgia Tech are quite the head start.
Verdict This is a team that could crater a little bit such a high level conference, but it isn't like Brey hasn't dealt with similar problems in the past. The easy schedule helps.

10. Miami Miami Hurricanes Miami

(ly KenPom #13 (27-8 overall, 13-5 ACC, Sweet 16)
Notable Losses PG Angel Rodriguez (gr), SG James Palmer (tr-Nebraska), G/F Sheldon McClellan (gr), F/C Ivan Uceda (gr), C Tonye Jekiri (gr)
Notable Returnees PG Ja'Quan Newton, G/F Davon Reed, F Anthony Lawrence, PF Kamari Murphy,
Notable Newcomers G Dejan Vasiljevic (int), SG Bruce Brown (30), G/F Rashad Muhammad (tr-San Jose St), PF Dewan Huwell (29), C Rodney Miller (152)
Will dance because... ...Jim Larranaga is a great coach with just enough returning (plus quite a bit of talent arriving) to overcome the graduation of perhaps the most accomplished trio in school history. Newton should slide into the PG spot without much of a hitch, while sharpshooter Reed, immediate impact freshman Brown, and transfer Rashad Muhammad should keep the offensive attack humming. Soph Lawrence showed plenty of promise in his initial run through the ACC, and could be in line for a lot more PT. Huwell ran into some off the court issues this summer, but can certainly score on the block.
Could fall short if... ...like other young teams Larranaga has coached at Miami, it just takes some time to get his group to gel. The future of the program is secure, but big things will be needed from Brown.
Schedule Analysis Average Two games against Duke won't be fun
Verdict There's no reason to think Miami can't make a run, but there are a lot of good teams in the ACC this year.

11. Florida State Florida St Seminoles Florida State

(ly KenPom #50 (20-14 overall, 8-10 ACC, NIT 2nd round)
Notable Losses G Devon Bookert (gr), G Benji Bell (tr-D2), SG Malik Beasley (NBA), F Montay Brandon (gr), C Boris Bojanovsky (gr)
Notable Returnees G Xavier Rathan-Mayes, G/F Terrance Mann, SF Dwayne Bacon, PF Phil Cofer, F/C Jarquez Smith, C Chris Koumadje
Notable Newcomers PG CJ Walker (129), SG Trent Forrest (69), F Jonathan Isaac (8),
Will dance because... ...Hamilton's perimeter rotation is too talented not to. Bacon surprised many by returning to school, and could really take off if he can improve his inconsistent outside shot. However, the real star might be Isaac, an elite combination of size and skill only just coming into his own. Rathan-Mayes has struggled shooting the ball for 2 years, but has improved as a PG and certainly is capable hitting shots at a better rate. With Mann and Forrest shoring up a deep rotation, FSU should be able to wear down opposing guards.
Could fall short if... ...somebody doesn't step up in the paint. It is hard to believe the Seminoles haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2012, and the main difference has been in the frontcourt. This year's squad still lacks a traditional big man, and the defense will continue to suffer. Hamilton will likely go small and let Isaac face up slower defenders, but a real move toward the top of the ACC will only come if Cofer, Smith or Koumadje can make a big jump.
Schedule Analysis Average No easy return matchups and Duke twice
Verdict Talented enough to be much higher than this, and Isaac will generate plenty of national attention. Maybe another incremental step in the right direction?

12. Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Panthers Pittsburgh

(ly KenPom #50 (21-12 overall, 9-9 ACC, NCAA 1st Round)
Notable Losses PG James Robinson (gr), SG Sterling Smith (gr), C Rafael Maia (gr)
Notable Returnees SG Damon Wilson, G/F Chris Jones, G/F Cameron Johnson, F Sheldon Jeter, F Jamel Artis, F Ryan Luther, F/C Michael Young
Notable Newcomers PG Justice Kithcart, PG Jonathan Milligan (RS-juco), SG Chrisshawn Clark, F/C Corey Manigault (155)
Will dance because... ...Jamie Dixon left behind two of the top returnees in the conference in Jamel Artis and Michael Young. New coach Kevin Stallings got some deserved criticism for his inability to get Vandy over the top, but he's always done his best work with underdog type squads. Staying with the forward theme, Jeter made strides last year and now somehow ends up playing for the coach that refused to release him from his scholarship at Vanderbilt 3 years ago.
Could fall short if... ...there isn't a surprise contribution from one of the guards. Robinson wasn't a world beater, but he ran good offense and it is debatable whether there is a single ACC-caliber guard on the roster this season. Things are so desperate that Stallings indicated this week he is considering letting Artis run the point. Yikes.
Schedule Analysis Armageddon 2x UNC, Virginia, Louisville, Syracuse. Nobody deserves this.
Verdict The talent level is declining precipitously, and Dixon saw the writing on the wall. Stallings is capable of making it work, but the schedule really leaves the Panthers behind the 8 ball.

Tier 4 - Not This Year

13. Wake Forest Wake Forest Demon Deacons Wake Forest

(ly KenPom #125 (11-20 overall, 2-16 ACC, No Postseason)
Notable Losses PG Codi Miller-McIntyre (gr), PG Madison Jones (tr-Seton Hall), G/F Cornelius Hudson (tr), F/C Devin Thomas (gr),
Notable Returnees G Bryant Crawford, G Mitchell Wilbekin, SF Greg McClinton, PF Konstantinos Mitoglu, F/C John Collins, C Doral Moore
Notable Newcomers PG Brandon Childress (191), SG Keyshawn Woods (tr-Charlotte), SF Austin Arians (tr-Milwaukee), C Sam Japhet-Mathias (169)
Will dance if... ...Danny Manning works miracles the way he did at Tulsa. Last year's freshman class showed some promise, especially combo guard Bryant Crawford and post man John Collins. The depth isn't there, but at least a couple of ACC difference makers could take the floor. Moore also showed a bit of a pulse in extremely limited minutes. Mid-major transfers Woods and Arians can both shoot the rock.
Will fall short because... ...last season wasn't just devastating on the floor, but on the recruiting path as well. After a solid initial class, Manning really needed to fill the roster with immediate impact talent to replace his two best players, Miller-McIntyre and Thomas. But it didn't happen, and the roster now has major holes. Maybe things just didn't click with the Bzdelik holdovers and Manning will turn things around. But this isn't the year to expect that kind of leap.
Schedule Analysis Average
Verdict It isn't clear what happened last year, but Manning will have to show some results in the next couple of years. Consider it a success if Wake Forest can even approach .500 this year.

Tier 5 - Not Ever

14. Georgia Tech Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Georgia Tech

(ly KenPom #49 (21-15 overall, 8-10 ACC, NIT)
Notable Losses PG Travis Jorgenson (tr), SG Adam Smith (gr), G/F Marcus Georges-Hunt (gr), PF Charles Mitchell (gr), PF James White (gr), C Nick Jacobs (gr),
Notable Returnees PG Josh Heath, SG Tadric Jackson, SF Quinton Stephens, C Ben Lammers
Notable Newcomers PG Justin Moore, G/F Josh Okogie (181), F Jodan Price (tr-Eastern Michigan), F Christian Matthews, F Kellen McCormick (tr-Western Michigan), C Sylvester Ogbonda (RS)
Will dance if... ...the fabric of reality is fundamentally altered
Will fall short because... ...Brian Gregory took Georgia Tech from a struggling but still respectable program and turned it into a dumpster fire. The Yellow Jackets finally managed to compete in his final year, but he did it with grad transfers and the future was grim. This is what happens when an AD lets a coach twist in the wind for 3 years. Pastner took the job much too late to make any recruiting inroads for 2016, and is left with perhaps the worst roster in school history.
Schedule Analysis Average
Verdict Ga Tech could have done a lot worse than Pastner, even though Memphis was in a death spiral as well. He should be able to recruit Georgia well, but year 1 will be ugly.

15. Boston College Boston College Golden Eagles Boston College

(ly KenPom #248 (7-25 overall, 0-18 ACC, No Postseason)
Notable Losses PG Eli Carter (gr), SG Matt Milon (tr-William and Mary), SG Sammy Barnes-Thompkins (tr-JuCo), C **Denis Clifford (gr), C Idrissa Diallo (tr-UC Riverside)
Notable Returnees G Jerome Robinson, SG AJ Turner, G/F Darryl Hicks, SF Garland Owens, F Ervins Meznieks,
Notable Newcomers PG Ty Graves, PG Kyran Bowman, SF Mike Sagay, F Connor Tarva (tr-Western Michigan), PF Nik Popovic, F/C John Carlos Reyes (RS), C Maurice Jeffers (tr-Delaware)
Will dance if... ...nope
Will fall short because... ...life isn't fair
Schedule Analysis Average
Verdict Jerome Robinson should be good?

Does Felicia Day ever have really bad breath that you can't tell her about, but it makes you want to go sit on the other side of the room, but you can't, because you work together sometimes, so you just breath through your mouth and pray for her to leave? Asking for a friend. Pretty much like every goddamn time I'm around her. She really needs to lay off the garlic hummus.
If you can have any theme song play when you enter a room (a la WWE), what would it be? When I was a kid, I loved WWF. I watched it every Saturday morning, and one of the highlights of my life was when my parents took my siblings and me to see it, live, at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.
So I guess I was probably ten or eleven, and Hulk Hogan was my hero. I got one of my T-shirts out of my dresser, and I cut it up into a Hulkster pattern, with the slashes across the back and everything. Then, I built a wrestling ring out of couch cushions and blankets and stuff in our living room, and decided that I was going to make a huge, grand entrance, just like Hulk Hogan.
I went to my parents records, and took out what was, at the time, a pretty radical record: Starship's Knee Deep In The Hoopla. I put it on the turntable, cranked the volume up, and readied the needle. I said, in my best announcer voice, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is our title bout for the evening! It is scheduled for one fall! Hailing from Sunland, California, weighing in at 90 pounds, the heavyweight champion of the world ... WIL WHEATON!" I dropped the needle on the record, then ran out of the room as fast as I could, so I could start strutting across the kitchen and into my "arena" as We Built This City On Rock and Roll played.
I was fully committed to the bit, too. I was pointing at the imaginary people in the audience, putting my hand up to my ear just like Hulk Hogan did, and then I tore off my t-shirt while growling and hearing fifteen thousand people scream for me, as I marched around the wrestling ring I'd made out of four couch cushions and some blankets.
And the thing about all of this is that nobody ever knew about it but me until just now, because when I did this stupid thing (that was actually totally awesome according to young me), nobody was in the house but me, and I put everything away before my parents got home.
I, uh, probably wouldn't have a theme song today.
I would have been in deep shit for ripping up a perfectly good tshirt. That's one of the reasons I did it when nobody was home.
Have you considered dressing up like Jonathan Frakes to conventions now that you have the beard for it? You know, I hadn't until just this moment. I think that's a thing that needs to happen. I'll do the walk and everything.
[What you gotta do is that awesome chair thing he does.] (Link to www.youtube.com. If you watch one of the Big Bang Theory episodes I did this year, you'll see that I did The Riker when I sat down.
Random story time: A few years ago, Stone Brewing released a mint chocolate stout. I was thrilled. I ran down to my local chain liquor store (BevMo) in the San Fernando Valley and asked the clerk where it was. He laughed and said, "Man, I'm sorry. We're holding the case for Wil Wheaton." I said that you (Wil) wouldn't miss one bottle, to which they replied, "Yeah, but he's pretty important. Who are you again?" Every time I go there and the guy who told me that (think his name is Christian) is working, I've made sure to mention, "Hey, if Wil Wheaton comes in, tell him I said he can go fuck himself and that he's a talentless piece of shit." He laughs and everyone around us thinks I'm a massive turd for talking shit about you since they don't know the context. If there's ever a beer that's not in stock at that store, my immediate response is, "Seriously? Did that fucking asshole Wil Wheaton buy them all?" Still get nothing but dead stares with that one. But anyway...how was that Stone mint chocolate stout? I did have that stout, and it was the only mint chocolate stout I've ever had that I enjoyed ... and the bottle that you wanted was the best of them all.
Who would be your absolute dream lineup for an episode of TableTop? Oh I know the answer to this: it's just me and Billie Piper in a game of "let's make out for twenty minutes."
Why Billie Piper? Because Billie Piper.
If I see you in public, should I offer to buy you a beer, a book, or just give you the thumbs-up-dude? I'm such a socially awkward penguin in real life, the thumbs-up-dude would probably be the best choice.
True story, at PAX 2012 I saw Wil walking toward me on the street and I said "Hey Wil!" You said back to me "Hey... Guy!" and then we just kept on walking. I got misty-eyed reading this. Those were good times, random guy on the street.
Have you ever witnessed Felicia day angry and what is the worst swear word she uses ? Felicia and I are like brother and sister, and while I know she's seen me at my worst, I've never seen her get angry. She's very focused and super smart, and I think that instead of getting angry, she just gets shit done.
I've never thought about trying to get her to say really offensive swears, but now I think I have to.
Wil, you're a handsome man but the photo currently at the top of your Wikipedia page does you no justice. You look like you've just eaten a spicy California burrito; all sweaty and flatulent. Do you have a favorite photo of yourself? This picture has got to go. Woah, that's not the most flattering thing in the world, is it? I think I should get a new picture there, but whenever I try to do anything with Wikipedia it turns into the most annoying edit war in the history of life, and I just don't have time for that BS.
Win at board games? Nailed it.
BTW, when my wife and I play games with friends, if anyone bumps the board/table now, it is referred to as "pulling an Anne". Your wife is beautiful and I'm sure she is lovely, but she has a legacy now. This is actually fairly common in the tabletop gaming community, now. It makes me furiously happy.
Hey Wil, Have you heard of Storium? It's an online storytelling game-a little more free form than normal tabletop roleplaying. What do you think of it? I love Storium! My friends created it, and I'm proud to be a backer.
I love that you've made it to the RPG game stretch goal - do you know yet what you're going to play? Do you want WOTC/D&D involved, or specifically not? Your games with AQI got me back into D&D after a long hiatus, and I really have enjoyed Chris Perkins' adventure design, and would love to see him take on a long-form campaign. OR are you planning to DM/GM? I have a very good idea about what I'm going to play, but I'm not ready to talk about it, yet. I can tell you that it won't be D&D, I am going to GM.
Do you know who's going to be playing yet? I thought the Dragon Age group all had great chemistry; are any of them coming back? (assuming I haven't just derped and missed this info!) We haven't announced the players, yet, so you didn't miss anything.
Which main character actor or actress was the biggest jackass while you were Wesley on TNG and why? Probably me, because I was an obnoxious and annoying teenager who was trying his hardest to not be lame, and usually failing.
Were you ever awkwardly attracted to Gates McFadden in your scenes together? Nope. I had a massive crush on Marina, but Gates was more like a mom to me, so ... no.
What will differentiate TWWP from shows like Tosh or Attack of the Show? And will we see any tabletop gaming segments? I think Tosh is mean, and not very clever. One of our prime directives is that we aren't mean, we don't make fun of our audience, and we're not afraid to make jokes that maybe only 10% of the audience will appreciate because they're that particular kind of geek. I think we'll have some similarities with Attack, just because I loved that show so much, and I think they blazed a great trail for us to sort of follow.
Also, can you maybe start lobbying SyFy to shange the name again? We all think SciFy is a good compromise. We probably won't see any tabletop gaming segments, because I have that whole other show where we cover that.
Ha. I wish. I get so many angry emails and phone calls from the network when I joke about that, especially when I call it "the network formerly-known as Sci-Fi", because they don't really have a sense of humor about it. I mean, I can't imagine why they'd be sensitive about it. It's not like everyone who is in their core audience felt punched in the face when they did that, or anything...
please don't fire me Syfy I'll be good.
If you had to play against DEATH in a board game (like in Bill and Ted) which game would you choose? Something where I think I'd have an inherent advantage, because I've played it so much. If I had to choose something right now, I'd probably choose Carcassonne or Takenoko.
Death has eternity to gain skill and prowess at all games though. You'd be better off just challenging him to a coin toss. I'd take a 50/50 chance versus a completely lopsided game any day of the week. Your math checks out.
Thanks for introducing me to a world of board games that I never knew existed. One quick question, if you could re-theme ANY game, what would it be? Dominion. I love that game so much, but the theme means basically nothing.
Do ants have lungs? I'm sorry, that's not a beard question.
At the very least, Roxann Dawson wasn't very happy with you. Where you a different person back then? Do you think you just didn't come off well in that episode? Is there not friendship and fraternity amongst cast members of different Star Trek shows? Oh man, that thing. So it was a deliberate joke that Roxann and I planned together, and coordinated with the producers of the show. We did it so well, the audience completely believed that it was real.
Writer, actor, homebrewer and philanthropist? Is there anything you can't do? I can't dance at all, and I can hardly play any instruments.
So I guess I've spent the last 6 months writing the Wil Wheaton 1-Man-Band Musical for nothing then! Dude, just get Julian Speroni to play in it.
Hi Wil. As someone who has also never seen Rampart do you think I should? No, watch Akira again instead.
love your audiobook work. Both Ready Player One and Fuzzy Nation are amongst my favorite listens. Can you tell us about any more that you have recently completed or will be doing soon? I recorded an audiobook on Monday, but I don't think I can say what it was or when it will be released. I love that shirt. Clever is my Kryptonite, and that shirt is damn clever. Good work, sir.
A new Scalzi book? Neat! But really, all of your work with his books really made the experiences so much more than just reading. Your reading of Fuzzy nation was so moving during Pinto's scene as well as the court scenes. Thank you. I had a hell of a good time doing that book.
What is one thing you wish you could go back in time and tell your younger self? I actually wouldn't tell him anything, because I believe that our lives are the result of everything we do, good and bad, joyful and painful, celebrated and regretted. I absolutely love my life right now, and I can look myself in the eye without ever feeling ashamed of myself. I wouldn't want to do anything to change my life or who I am, even though a lot of my younger years were not always awesome.
So I've started playing Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Carcassone and all of your video have been a great help. I want to introduce my playgroup to something a bit more involved though. What would you suggest would be a good next step for something more strategy based and less dependent on random factors like dice? Check out Lords of Waterdeep, Revolution, and Small World.
was wondering how you deal with/respond to the people that criticize you for being on The Big Bang Theory? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm not required to listen or respond to it.
Thanks for doing this AMA! As a fan of the Detroit Red Wings (formerly of the Western Conference), I just want to say... GO KINGS GO! Would love to see the Kings finish off the other CA teams and take a run at The Cup! After the release of a couple really short educational videos, I've received numerous comments suggesting that I look like you. I think it's the beardedness: Link to www.youtube.com. And last, what do you think about Corey Perry and his antics: Link to imgur.com ? My instinct when I saw Perry do that was that he was being a douche, but then I found out that he and Carter are friends, so I thought it was actually pretty cool.
Wil Wheaton, If you were to take over the world, what tabletop game would you mandate be in everyone's home? Diplomacy.
Do you have a say in how 'you' are portrayed on The Big Bang Theory? Occasionally, Steve Molaro will ask me if I've had an experience in my real life that would sort of inspire them to do something with my character on the show. Probably the best example of that sort of thing is when he asked me if there was anything in my real life that could help them develop my conversation with Sheldon after he finds out he has to retract his discovery.
Hi Wil. Will TableTop Season 3 be available anywhere else besides YouTube? Yes. We'll have it in as many different places as we can, which is one of the huge benefits of being completely independent.
Hi! So among Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, and maybe Netrunner, what game do you think should be a staple in everyone's Game Cabinet? And will you ever get around to publishing that book of conversations with your pets? Of those games you listed, definitely Settlers.
Hey Wil, just wanted to say thanks for being one of the most awesome people ever. PIE FOREVER.
I was wondering: which side do you come down on in the cake vs pie debate? And now a question for you: losing your wedding ring in the ocean vs. not losing your wedding ring in the ocean?
I'd say only if you also dump wine on your new wife, her step mom and break a few things over the course of the day as well. Yes! Do all of those things, and you almost have a bingo!
Hi Wil, is it true that you are a Cumberbitch? y/y. So much yes.
Your desert island board game? (assuming friends are marooned with you) That one where you build a working transporter to get you back to civilization.
Hi Wil, I'm a big fan of Tabletop. Will we see Battlestar Galactica played this season? I'm not sure. I love that game, but I think it may be just slightly too complex for our format.
I'll playtest it with Producer Boyan, though, and see if we can make it work.
Thrilled to see Tabletop season 3 and the RPG spinoff are being so robustly funded on IndieGoGo. Do you think the show has a future beyond season 3, and if so, do you have any ideas about making it self-sustaining going forward, or do you think it will be crowd-funded from here on out? Crowdfunding season three was an amazing experience, because it showed us in a very tangible way how much Tabletop means to people all over the world, but it was also a little weird for me. I'm very self sufficient in every aspect of my life, and if I could afford to fund it myself, I would. At every step of the way, I had to remind myself that this isn't about me, it's about the community of Tabletop gamers who love this show and want to see more of it. When I remembered that I wasn't doing this for me, but was doing it because it's so important to so many people, it felt less weird to me.
I don't know if we'll go beyond season three (we need to finish season three first, and who knows what's going to happen in the Mysterious Future) but if we do, I hope we can make it self-sustaining in some way that lets us maintain our independence, and keep the production values as awesome as they are now.
Hi Wil, I'm so happy you're doing an AMA! I always get all giddy and squee! when you're on Big Bang. > Are there any games that you'd love to do a show on, but are too complicated to explain quick enough to make the show entertaining. (I'm thinking Arkham Horror).
PS - Can you make an episode of Big Bang where you make out with Sheldon? It would be adorable!! Maybe bring it up to the writers? Those games, though, aren't exactly good introductory games, and one of the prime directives of Tabletop is to showcase games that are an easy introduction to our hobby.
Have you heard of the Hard Science Fiction Tabletop RPG called Eclipse Phase? I've heard of Eclipse Phase, but I've never played it. I love science fiction, but I've never been that into SF RPGs for some reason.
What is your opinion on J.J.Abrams' Star Trek restart? I think he did a brilliant job of translating Star Trek into a language and style that is relevant to my kids' generation. Hopefully, the Millenials will see this version of Star Trek, get interested in the older series, and become full-on Trekkies.
THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME RIGHT NOW. Last day of finals and I'm still powering through season 2 instead of studying. WHAT THE HELL?! Get off Reddit, turn off Tabletop, and study for your finals! All this other stuff will still be here when you're done. Now: go kick ass. I'm counting on you, so don't let me down.
It's not about anything you listed to ask you about, but any idea when you'll be back on @midnight? I absolutely loved the episode you were on. YES! I'm talking with the gang over there to set up a show in July.
Have you seen his new tatoo? He's clearly a closet Wings fan. ಠ_ಠ
Question: As a long-time member of Reddit do you feel like the community has changed for the better, worse or hasn't really changed since it has become more popular? What do you think we should do to improve Reddit? My Reddit experience hasn't changed very much over the years. People are generally decent to me, and when someone's a dick, RES makes sure I never have to see them again.
As a celebrity what is the worst thing? Paparazzi? Repetitive questions? Annoying fans? No one getting your highly intellectual jokes? I'm very lucky in that I'm not someone those shitbag scumfuckers the Paparazzi care about, but I once was, and it was awful. I don't particularly enjoy talking to the press, especially the entertainment press because it's so goddamn vapid, but that's part of my job at times, so I just deal with it.
Honestly, though, I have a wonderful life, and the few small things I have to endure because of my job are entirely worth it.
I'm really looking forward to The Wil Wheaton Project, but, as often happens with many TV shows, it won't air in my country (Spain), at least in the near future. Since the show is about trending topics and news of the week, I'd like to watch it as soon as possible, but the only way to do that is torrenting it (assuming it's not online and without geographic restrictions). Would you be okay with that? Do you have an alternative solution other than not watching it? I just want as many people as possible to see the show, so unless and until the network or whoever makes it easy for you (like with global streaming, which I've been pushing for but they can't do because of a huge list of reasons) do what you have to so you can see it.
Are there plans for a Cards Against Humanity Tabletop sometime in the (hopefully near) future? Yes. We're going to do a very dirty "Tabletop After Dark" episode in season three, in which we will play Cards Against Humanity.
Do you wear socks with your sandals? Only when I'm wearing shorts.
For the RPG show, have you thought about whether or not you'll be a player or a DM? I plan to be the GM.
Can we go back to your early work (like Stand By Me and TNG) and do a remastered version where we add a beard to your characters? I'm pretty sure that this has to happen, now.
When are you and Jeph Jacques just going to get it over with and fuck already? Hey hey hey settle down. We haven't even been on a proper date, yet.
Could you explain in detail your emotions during the Kings first round? Pick pretty much any .gif from /nonononoyes and you'll have a good idea.
How is your meemaw? I don't have any conventions coming up before Comicon, so she's doing fine, thank you.
Excluding Star Trek, what has been the project that you have enjoyed the most? What was it like to work on "Leverage?" We haven't shot anything for The Wil Wheaton Project, yet, but I love working with my writers and producers. When we get into the writer's room to work out our jokes, it turns into this really wonderful game of just trying to make each other laugh, and it's amazing.
"I'm sure you're tired of hearing Star Trek questions but Whoopi Goldberg, you ever hit that?" Please don't talk to me when I'm bowling. I need to stay focused.
When you look back at your accomplishments - anything particular come to mind? Personally, I think this speech is the best thing you've ever done. Edit: If you see this, pat yourself on the back for doing good in the world. Thank you. I just do my best to be the change I'd like to see in the world.
Hey Wil! Saw a video of you talking to a little girl about being bullied and made fun of for being a nerd. An incredibly touching moment indeed, but I'm wondering, how can "nerd culture" come out to fight injustice? What can we do to try to make the world a better place? This will seem corny, and it feels corny to say it, but it's true: a wise human being once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
I'm wondering: Why an octopus for a tattoo? Because I have loved cephalopods my whole life, and Octopodes, especially. They're beautiful animals, and when I decided that I wanted to get a tattoo to go with my wife's heartbeat on my other arm, it was an easy choice.
Wil just want to shout out right quick, you did a FANTASTIC job narrating Ready player one, but I have to ask are you coming back to narrate any more books, namely Armada by Ernest Cline? I would love to narrate that book, so if they ask me, I'll do whatever I can to fit it into my schedule.
Hey Wil! You seem to be so busy with Tabletop, game design, your new show, cameos, time with your family, etc... Do you have free time for casual gaming anymore? Do you have a core group that you hardcore game with? I have been playing with the same group of friends since high school. We try to get together twice a month, but we haven't had time for a full game day since the beginning of the year.
What is your favorite protein to put on a burrito? I like chicken, the spicier the better.
I recently discovered your tabletop series and have been completely addicted to it. My wallet hates you right now... Definitely looking forward to season 3! But anyway what would you say is your all time favorite game? I love so many games from so many different eras, it's hard to say. At the moment, I love Agricola and Takenoko, but when I was in high school I loved Car Wars and 40K.
What are your thoughts that the Season 3 contributions have topped $1,180,000.00. Are you going to release a video like you did for the earmarks of $750,000? Yeah, we shot a video today that may go out tonight, if our editors can turn it around that quickly.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. Man, so much I would like to ask, but the one thing I keep coming back to is, are we ever going to get Memories of the Future Volume 2? It's something I'd like to do, because I have about half of it finished, but realistically it wouldn't happen until next year, at the soonest.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how fun is it to send Warren Ellis questions on tumblr about his beard? Easily 15 out of 10.
Favorite Kings player of all time? Favorite Current Kings Player? How much do you love Gaborik? Team Gabbo For Life.
I am super excited by all the topics for the AMA, but I am worried brewing is going to get missed, so any ambitious homebrew projects coming up? I've had a porter kit in my office for a month that I haven't had time to make, but maybe this weekend that will finally change.
If you told 8 year old you all about your life now, what would he find the coolest/weirdest? He'd be pretty excited about all the games he gets to play.
What is your 2nd favourite nhl team? Whoever is playing the Ducks.
Hey, Wil, I once read that when you were young you dated Christa Denton, the young actress who played the sister in the movie "The Gate". What was it like dating her? I always thought she was cute. This is the first time I've ever heard of this, so ... i think you got bad intel.
Very simple question for you: do you have a favourite flag? Yes.
Nah, man. The leg has to go over the back of the chair to be a full Riker move. Like the chair isn't even there. This is true, but I had to modify it so it would slip past the network.
This would be a huge improvement over the other picture. Make it happen, Internet.
If I were Wil, I would call it "Cream of Wheaton": Cherry red ice cream, caramel swirls, and blueberries. ...and if you're wondering how that color combination would look. I love that. Have some gold, on me.
Ice cream that tastes like nothing called, "Bland By Me". I don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is hilarious.
I think we should stay focused on Rampart you guys. YES! Thank you. Finally, someone who gets it.
Rampart without trackballs is not Rampart. I wanted to like that game so much, and it just destroyed me whenever I tried to play it. I don't think I've gotten past the first level, ever.
Yes, over here, n'hey, n'hey. In episode BF12, you were battling barbarians while riding a winged Appaloosa, yet in the very next scene, my dear, you're clearly atop a winged Arabian. Please do explain it. Obviously, it's a sort of magical horse. I mean, even a child could have seen that.
When it comes to gaming, you mostly only ever talk about tabletops games, which I love. I love classic video games, because I grew up during video gaming's golden age. On the 2600, I loved Yar's Revenge. On NES I loved the original Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, Blades of Steel, and RC Pro-Am. On Sega, I loved NHL '94 and Mortal Kombat II. On PS3, it was all about Vice City. On Xbox, I currently love Borderlands 2 and will always love Dragon Age: Origins.
But I was wondering what, if any, is your favorite classic or modern video game. I play a bunch of indie titles on Steam, too many to list them all, but highly recommend Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable, Gone Home, and, of course, Civ V.
But... Vice City was on ps2... HEY! THIS GUY ISN'T ONE OF US AT ALL! Oh, you're right. Shit. I meant PS2. My favorite game on PS3 is The Last of Us.
Wil, I'm in LA and. I'm just getting into homebrewing. I was wondering where you do your local homebrew shopping. I love Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply. Just don't go there when the ponytail guy is working, because he's really a jerk for some reason. Greg and Kevin, who own it, are usually there on the weekends, and they're awesome.
Black socks for extra style points. Duh.
